Guillermo G. Peydró (Madrid, 1981) has won the Universo vídeo [Video_Universe] prize, awarded by LABoral and Gijón International Film Festival as part of the activities that come under FICXLAB, a new section included in the current edition of the festival which is aimed at designing and producing a series of screenings and activities that link up film with visual arts. It actually entails the introduction of video art and experimental film to the setting of a film festival such as Gijón’s.

As part of the programme LABoral and Sala Astragal in Gijón are holding the exhibition Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español [Video Universe_The Other Spanish Audiovisual Scene], curated by Alfredo Aracil, which includes works by Samuel Alarcón, Albert Alcoz, Velasco Broca, Chus Domínguez, Guillermo G. Peydró, Kikol Grau, Verónica Ibarra and Alberte Pagán. The eight Spanish authors, selected from the online PLAT archive, have competed for a two-week production residency at LABoral Centro de Arte to take place in the early months of 2014.

The jury has selected Guilllermo G Peyró, who during the two weeks of artistic residency at LABoral will produce a work which will be shown at the Gijón International Film Festival 2014 and subsequently become part of the Gijón Film Festival archive, which is held at LABoral Centro de Arte for promotional, educational and research purposes, at all times committed to quoting the author. The residency fees will reach €600 gross and the filmmaker will be provided with accommodation, space, the technical means and guidance for working at LABoral.

His short film proposal in Gijón, as with his previous works on cities (Paris, New York, Montreal), will consist, in principle, of entering into a relationship through his camera, drawing from his  perspective as an art historian and filmmaker. He said, “During the two weeks I have, the approach will necessarily be more epidermal than in those works where I’ve had from two to four months, but I think I can make something interesting.”

Guillermo G. Peydró is a filmmaker, art historian and former programmer for Greenpoint Film Festival (Brooklyn, New York) in 2011. He is currently completing his PhD thesis at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid based on “film-essay on art”, where he studies the forms of critical dialogue between cinema and visual arts since the beginning of the 20th century as well as its aesthetic, academic and political applications.

His filmmaking starts from a second degree reading of images from the past, belonging to both the art environment and personal memory, but also images of the present. His first two film-essays on art, Las variaciones Guernica and El jardín imaginario are a denunciation of the use of violence against civilians and its opposite: a meditation on European culture and creativity; both were screened at the Official Section of the Documenta Madrid 2012 Festival and have been shown in cinemas, museums, universities and cultural centres in Europe, North America and South America.

The exhibition Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español will show his films Louie's Toy Garden, 2011, at LABoral and Art of the Actor, 2011, at Sala Astragal.
