The Coordinator of Plataforma Cero. Centre of Research, Production and Resources at LABoral, Pedro Soler, will present the activities in the areas of production of the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation in Gijón at “Plataformes 2011”, II Congress of European Centres and Platforms of Production. Organised by La Fábrica Barcelona and Obra Social Caja Madrid, this conference will take place from today, Tuesday, until Thursday 14th July in the auditorium of the Espai Cultural Caja Madrid in Barcelona. “Plataformes” is an annual meeting, whose first edition took place within the framework of the “Europes” Festival last year, aspiring to be a space which fosters collaboration between production centres and professionals, stimulates greater knowledge of the cultural sector and brings together the experiences of the leading directors of European production centres.

During the three days of the congress, debates, presentations, delivery of papers and networking days for cultural professionals in the private and public sector will take place. Alessio Antoniolli, Director of Gasworks (United Kingdom); Sandy Fitzgerald, Ambassador of Trans Europe Halles (Sweden); Christiane Riedel, Director of ZKM Centre for Art and Media (Germany); Rui Horta, Director of O Espaço do tempo (Portugal); and Nicolaus Schafhausen, Director of Witte de With (the Netherlands), among others, will be some of the people sharing experiences about the new paradigms shaping present-day European artistic production.

Pedro Soler, who took on the coordination of Plataforma Cero at LABoral last January, will base his paper, planned for tomorrow Wednesday 13th, on the links between art production and knowledge and the responsibility held by art centres for investing in research and development in order to nurture a powerful creative fabric, which is a source for new trades, works and subjectivities. In his opinion, “We are witnessing a mutation in the purely exhibitory function of art centres which is evolving towards the concept of an open laboratory for the production of subjectivities”.

The importance of DIY (Do It Yourself) and local communities, now open to the world and other cultural agents thanks to the better communication access facilitated by new technologies; the need to educate and experiment (“making yourself learn with the body”); the use of free software licences and open code as a means to foster creation from the base; the role of the cultural agent as an articulator-mediator between resources and the wishes of the community (permaculture); and the conviction that creators and citizens are fundamental in propelling the services and activities of a production centre are other points which will be addressed in the speech given by the head of Plataforma Cero at LABoral.

And as a practical example of all this, Pedro Soler will give an account of the programme and activities at Plataforma Cero, which works as an umbrella covering the research, production and resources at the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation. Plataforma Cero consists of a modular and flexible structure which, in terms of its functioning, is organized into different programmes and services aimed at working groups, individual creators, collectives and educators operating in the intersections of science, art, technology, creative industries and society.
