LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón has launched an international call to fill the position of Artistic Director which will become vacant from next January, following the departure of the current artistic director, Benjamin Weil, for the Centro Botín in Santander.

The terms and conditions for the call require a highly experienced professional in the field of the arts, who has international prestige and is prepared to continue developing a unique and cutting-edge project in its definition according to its strategic plan. The deadline for submitting applications is 00.00 (midnight) on 7 January 2014.

Among the defined roles, the Artistic Director will form part of the management team of the Centre (along with the management board) and will be responsible for developing the programme strategy covering all areas of the Centre: production, education, research, leading the development of theoretical discourse in the framework of the project direction and management at LABoral and the key conceptual issues concerning this.

The new Artistic Director should articulate the central concepts of LABoral through production and research projects, exhibitions, meetings or any other activity and, also, establish programming lines which favour the integration of the activities in such a way that all of the areas (production, education and research) complement each other.

Additionally, in developing the activities programme, the Activities Director will take into account the importance of contributing to the development and maintenance of a large community of users, which requires active involvement in the Asturian artistic scene and the search for formulas for its projection, training, integration and other opportunities in the global context. Together with the Managing Director, he or she will research grant and sponsorship opportunities (public and private) and actively collaborate to ensure that in the course of drawing up budgets, not only is financial viability considered but the achievement of other general objectives (institutional growth, programme relevance) is guaranteed. Ultimately, the successful candidates will contribute as an integral part of the management team to maintaining the coherence and balance between the programme and resources made available for it.

REQUIRED PROFILE

The Artistic Director must have a university education with the minimum level of Degree or equivalent; demonstrate a wide knowledge and experience in the field of contemporary art, technology and industrial creation, as well as a proven track record and experience necessary for the different areas of artistic practice: production, research and diffusion.

Also, the applicant is required to demonstrate creativity, a global and innovative vision, dynamism and initiative through curated exhibitions, completed projects, published texts, lectures and participation in roundtables on contemporary artistic practices and industrial creation; an in-depth knowledge of  art systems (criticism, market, artists, associations, institutions) and the new models of emerging contemporary cultural production; and have a network of national and international contacts (with a particular focus on Europe) in the field of the arts, technology and contemporary industrial creation in order to contribute to the continuity of LABoral as a leading international centre and ensure that it develops an activities policy of excellence in close collaboration with other institutions, making the centre a leader in international collaborative projects.

The applicants, who are required to have a full command of both Spanish and English, should have the ability to foster the exchange of  programmes and knowledge with other centres, institutions and similar or complementary  organisations in order to position and incorporate the institution in local, national and international collaborative networks; demonstrate knowledge and experience in the ambit of research, development and technological, scientific, social and business innovation as well as in the establishment and management of interdisciplinary partnerships; and be able to communicate learned knowledge, involve and engage a wide range of audiences. Also required are proven abilities and experience in the proposition, implementation and development of lines of collaboration in the context of the local and regional community context where LABoral is situated and with which it cooperates and aims to reach.  In addition to knowledge of digital communication tools (websites, social networks, etc.) and the capacity to maximize their use in LABoral’s field of activities, the ability to represent LABoral in all areas, building and developing internal and external networks and those for communication and teamwork, are also required skills.

Proven communication and negotiation skills, planning and management, the capacity to adapt to a broad range of circumstances   (artistic, socio-economic and/or institutional), knowing how to provide solutions which are appropriate in each case while respecting the spirit and philosophy of the Centre, and showing sufficient knowledge of those agents networks which could contribute financial and cultural resources to the institution, as well as the capability to develop with senior management alliances and strategies which attract, provide and enrich this network of members, are other prerequisites for applicants for this position.
