Julia Drouhin is a French artist and curator living in Tasmania.  From August 11 to August 16 she will complete a residency a LABoral where she will develop Sweet Tribology , a project that insists on the fading beauty of the fragile forgotten wax cylinders objects used for recording and reproducing sound through the phonograph invented by Thomas Alva Edison on 1876.

Julia Drouhin has invited 40 women artists to select make a personalized 1 minute sample – wax minute - of Edison wax cylinders chosen by herself at SPAT (Sound Preservation Association of Tasmania). SPAT is an archival music museum run by 80 years old music lovers with tonnes of radios and incredible forgotten sound devices, waiting to be activated.

The artist will use this material to record chocolate records that she will directly “cook” during her residency at Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón. Sweet Tribology chocolate record evokes, according to the artist, that nostalgic sound process of the forgotten wax cylinders, but, each time the needle touches the surface the printed sound fades away. By reproducing once and again the chocolate plate, the original sound is gradually lost, but many other sounds start to sound.

The aim is that the audience “eats” that music. This will happen on August 14 in the recreational area of El Pinar del Monte Deva. The chocolate records will be listened to and eaten in the performance Sweet Tribology. Dulce fricción en la cumbre, an electronic music picnic that will take place next Friday, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sweet Tribology. Dulce fricción en la cumbre is organised by LABoral and L.E.V. Festival as a meeting open for the public that combines the typical summer picnic with experimental electronic music with the participation of renowned international and local sound artists.

Visitors can bring their own food and take part in the activity that will take place at the pine groove leisure area of Monte Deva, Gijón. This special picnic will include an action with chocolate vinyls by the artist Julia Drouhin, together with some international Dj's that represent a wide range of the most unusual electronic music. These are dot tape dot (Montpellier) Live; Regalin Cósmico. Fium (Asturias) Dj Set; and Skygaze, Neonized. (Asturias) Live-Dj Set

Part of the musical selection that Drouhin will print on her chocolate records, combined with some statements by the artist will be included in the radio show Fluido Rosa at Radio Nacional de España. Radio 3 that, conducted by Rosa Pérez, will be broadcasted next Monday August 17, from 3 to 4 a.m. Moreover, it will also be broadcasted at Soundproof, a weekly portal on radio art, sound landscapes and performance conducted by Miyuki Jokiranta at the Australian Station ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s RN) on August 14, coinciding with the picnic and, then, on August 16.

Julia Drouhin (Strasbourg, 1983) is a French artist and curator living in the bush of Tasmania. She creates mini-FM or online collective events in public space in France, Spain and Australia. She often mixes sound, food and fashion in her actions. She has been investigating haunted air of ghost towns, phono-memory of Jupiter planet, Disco Ghost with records made of chocolate or ice, Gleam Robot that makes the music of colours or what is a digital perm. She co-founded the international Radiophonic Creation Day and the French Kontact sonoreS festival. She completed her PhD in aesthetics, sciences and technology about the art of walking and radio events in 2011 at the University of Paris 8.
