This coming 15th August the period for the submission of proposals which will compete in the pocket film festival filMO born from the LABoral film project opens, inviting works made with mobile technology (mobile telephones, micro-cameras, and photograph cameras which do not shoot in low resolution). Its aim is to promote the development of creative potential and encourage the critical involvement of teenagers and young creators in a society which is built on and understood from the core perspective of the digital image.

In its third edition filMO is held under the slogan Re-Make/Re-Model, and includes the following sections:

filMO amateur film: section for pieces made with non-HD cameras, telephones and/or micro cameras. Those especially appreciated will be works which seek to build bridges to cinematographic tradition. In other words those which intend to set, from processing to rereading, affiliation lines which both in form and content establish the genealogy of the moving image: “...the present is the repeater, the past is repetition itself, but the future is that which is repeated”.

Minute sequence: This section is based on the legacy of the Lumière brothers and analyses how their small pieces, less than 1 minute long, which meant in part the birth of one of the central paths in cinematographic art -documentary-, still live on in our imagination. Bearing this in mind, it aims for the making of pieces which last less than one minute and are articulated into a unique sequence. While not looking for wholly imitative remakes with respect to the original pieces, which nonetheless also has a place, it is searching for the present-day relevance of such futile actions such as those that preside over pieces like The Sprinkler Sprinkled, Feeding the Baby, Arrival of a Train and Workers Leaving the Factory. How to think of images which we obtain from reality when our world, with respect to that of the Lumière brothers, seems submerged in an aura of unreality? These, among many more, are some of the questions that we would like to answer with this special tribute to the cinema of the Lumières.

Invited guests: section based on architecture and/or images from the LABoral archives. This year filMO has invited a string of guests, who will be visiting LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón from the middle of August until the mid-October, to make an audiovisual piece based on the archives at the Centre, along with the architectural complex of the Ciudad de la Cultura [City of Culture]. In this sense, the aim is to work on the image using mobile devices or low definition cameras which will be made available. Among those selections made are Manuel Asín, Chus Domínguez, Alberto Cabrera Bernal and Pablo García Canga.

The finished pieces will be available for viewing through the LABoral audiovisual platform, where they will stay hosted after being incorporated into the Centre’s Mediateca_Archivo [Media Archive Library] at the Centre itself.

Rules and Awards
Each one of the three sections which make up the festival is awarded with two prizes. Firstly, the jury award of 500 euros, and secondly, the public award of 300 euros. The jury, composed of a series of experts related to -both at a critical and professional level- with the world of moving image, will be led by the members of the LABoral Mediateca_Archivo working group and by José Luís Cienfuegos, Director of the Gijón International Film Festival.

As regards public voting, where the public prize will come from, filmo will have at its disposal a Vimeo group, where the users, after registering, will be able to upload their works and also where, by joining up, the public can vote. In this way, Vimeo becomes a platform that invites the visitors or spectators to produce their own pieces. The period to post works on the Vimeo channel runs from 15th August to 1st October. http://vimeo.com/groups/fil
