LABoral holds a street art workshop given by the Chilean graffiti artist “mono” González
The artist will prepare the mural which will be painted at the Semana Negra location
The Chilean grafitti artist Alejandro “mono” González will give a workshop on street art at LABoral from Monday 9th until Wednesday 11th. This workshop is being held in collaboration with Gijón’s Semana Negra [Noir Week], and at its location the artist and participants will carry out an intervention and paint a large scale mural.
A pioneer of what is now known as street art, Alejandro “mono” González contributed to the victory of Salvador Allende in Chile’s 1973 presidential elections as the person responsible for the Popular Front’s street painting campaign. “mono” González was the creator of the Ramona Parra Brigade which illustrated the walls of Chile’s main cities with paintings containing social and political messages during the Popular Front’s election campaign. He is today one of the most well known plastic artists in his country.
His most important work is the mural called Vida y trabajo [Life and Work], which can be seen in Santiago’s Parque Bustamante metro station, and he continues painting in the street today. The set designer of various several Chilean films including La Frontera [The Borderland], Amelia López O´Neil and Machuca, he has participated as a guest in a wide range of street mural cultural activities all over the world. He has also run classes on street graffiti and screen printing.
The artist and participants of this workshop will create and experiment with production using low cost materials and common techniques. The first session of the workshop includes an introduction to street graphics and the design proposal by the participants. Following an initial printing of these designs, the second session is set aside for analysing the proposals put forward by the participants, while in the third workshop work will be done on the intervention which will be carried out at Semana Negra [Noir Week].
