LABoral hosts the opening the Festival Miradas de Mujeres
A performance by Proyecto Piloto and a video installation de Cristina Ferrández will be on show this Saturday at the Centro de Arte

As the venue for the opening of the Festival Miradas de Mujeres de 2014, LABoral will host the performance Adamantina by Proyecto Piloto, as well as the opening event of the video installation Paso de gigantes, by Cristina Ferrández, a project which has been specifically developed for this festival, within the framework of a two-weeks production residency programme of the artist at Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial.
Festival Miradas de Mujeres is an initiative of MAV, Mujeres en las Artes Visuales, a statewide non-profit interbranch association made up by 400 plastic arts professionals based in Spain. Their aim is to disseminate the role of women in all professional fields of visual arts, from artistic creation to curatorship, artistic criticism, research and management. In line with this objective, the Festival invites museums, galleries, art centres and universities to join in with exhibitions and activities by female artists during the month of March, with the purpose of bringing together as many exhibitions by female artists as possible and to occupy the exhibition agenda of that month, at national level and, starting this year, at international level.
The 2014 festival will include over 300 cultural activities across Spain, where around 1.000 artists will take place in museums and art centres, among which, in addition to LABoral, is Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, La Casa Encendida, Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid), or Museo San Telmo (San Sebastián); Universities such as Oviedo, Málaga, Zaragoza or Cantabria; and a wide network of art galleries, schools and cultural centres from all over Spain.
Adamantina
On Saturday, March 8, from 12.30, the audience will have the opportunity to take part in the performance of Adamantina, at Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón, a hybrid proposal of dance-performance and plastic and sound art which develops around the problems of women, gender and identity in contemporary art. This creation by Proyecto Piloto uses the female body-meat to criticise the artistic deformation and the exhibitionist aspect of art. The artists work starting from a body which is questioned and then re-invents itself, a sacred place which also becomes a victim, staging itself based both on freedom and on sacrifice. The performance is carried out by Rebeca Martin, Mariate García, Patricia Vázquez and Carmen Vázquez, and the music is by Eugenia (Mind Revolution).
Paso de gigantes
Furthermore, from Saturday, March 8 to April 27, LABoral will host the exhibition Paso de gigantes (2013), a multiple-channel video installation developed by the artist Cristina Ferrández during her two-week production residency at LABoral. This will serve as the contribution of Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial to the Festival Miradas de Mujeres 2014.
Paso de Gigantes takes us to a forecasted geography, as if in a visual cartography: Locations which are linked to landscape transformations due to large public infrastructures temporarily suspended and to singular buildings of cultural use left abandoned, which have been built or refurbished with public funds. Art, as a method to analyse contemporaneity, helps us make the portrait of a time and a geography based on its abandoned architectures and public works, stablishing a new category of the sublime to make a chronicle of the present, which is charged with an urgency for future times.
Proyecto Piloto is a dance company founded in Gijón in 2007 in order to research about the body language, its life, its movement and everything around it. Currently, the company is going through an important stage in its development, after staging several pieces, such as …en construcción… (2008), Alojando Vísceras (2009), La Masa Danza (2009), Espacio Improvisado (2011). “ALICIA en..” is the company’s new project for children, thus opening a new field of research.

Cristina Ferrández (Alicante, 1974 lives and works in Salas. A graduate of Fine Arts from the Universidad de Castilla la Mancha, she started to get involved in matters related with land regeneration and natural consciousness through culture and art, while preparing her PhD at Universidad Miguel Hernández in Alicante.
Cristina Ferrández works in the field of artistic creation as a critical and reflexive process, developing visual projects which highlight land, reviewing and questioning our relationships with the landscape.
She has developed artistic projects related with landscape and nature, such as, Blacklock Nature Sanctuary, Minessota; East Jerusalem-09 Arab Capital of Culture, Palestina; Territorios de Encuentro, Patagonia; Threshold of Time Symposium, Portland; Instantes de Paisaje’09 CDAN, Huesca. She has been awarded grants by several institutions, such as: Cajastur, Fundación Bilbao Arte Fundazioa 2006, Centro de Escultura Museo Antón de Candás 2010, Becas Al-Norte 2007 and Universidad de Castilla la Mancha at the Hochschule Für Grafik Und Buchkunst von Leipzig.
