LABoral will host next Saturday, April 26, a round table on the current situation of Asturias. This activity is included in the exhibition of the video installation Giant Steps, a work by the Asturian artist Cristina Ferrández Box, which will be exhibited in the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial until Sunday, April 27.

Giant Steps is a project carried out during a two-week art production residency, which represents the participation of the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial to the Festival Miradas de Mujeres 2014. The point of departure of the work is art, as a method to analyse the present, to try and make the portrait of a time and a geographical space based on its architecture and abandoned civil works. Thus, a new category of the sublime is established to describe the present, with a discourse loaded with elements of the future.

In Giant Steps there is a figure that reminds us of the Angel of History mentioned by Walter Benjamin in his Thesis of the Philosophy of History. This figure, anchored in the mist, seems to looking for a balanced position in order to carry out an analysis of the present starting from a criticism of the concept of progress.

This discussion panel, that will take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., bears the title Ideas of progress, criticism and reality in Asturias and it aims to reflect upon  the concept of progress understood as a time standard in the evolution of history. The point of departure will be the analysis of several examples of the Asturian cartography from different perspectives such as art theory, philosophy, or the art practice itself. All of them are sites linked with the transformation of landscape due to the development of civil works infrastructures, which are now-a-days suspended, as well as the study of singular buildings with cultural, scientific or social purposes, also abandoned.

The debate will be joined by Luis Feás, art critic and director of the magazine Atlántica XXII; Xuan Cándano, Director of Atlántica XII; Juan Carlos Gea, writer and art critic; Charo Hernández, writer; La Madreña, a group devoted to civil recovery for social purposes which is headquartered in the building of the former Health Ministry of Asturias; and Cristina Ferrández Box, artist and author of the video installation which is the point of departure of this activity.
