This coming Saturday 15 and on Sunday 16 December, LABoral will host a new edition of its design market.  From 12 noon until 10 pm, more than 50 designers will show and sell their work to the public. Coinciding with this activity, the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón will also hold a ‘Collaborative Music and Self-sufficiency’ conference. This event is part of the Códigos abiertos [Open Codes] programme, a working group which is carrying out research into new ways of producing, sharing and spreading culture.

The LABoral Design Market was started in December 2008 and every four months it is offered as a new space open to creativity intended for showcasing the work by designers.

Coordinated by Marco Recuero, in each edition visitors have the opportunity to see and purchase graphic works, t-shirts, clothing items, badges, photographs, post cards, bags, belts, home decor items, jewellery and shoes, among other things. All of the products are original and unique creations, artesanally produced by young designers working in the Principality of Asturias.

At the market, LABoral will also offer for sale in the market a line of products designed and produced by fabLAB Asturias, the art centre’s digital fabrication laboratory which operates as a space for production, research and development. The public will be able to buy puzzles, bracelets and other decorative objects at very reasonable prices. Publications and objects usually sold at the art centre’s shop will also be available. Together with merchandising items, design objects made exclusively for LABoral will be on offer, as well as catalogues on the exhibitions produced at the centre.

Visitors may become a “LABoral Friend” or give the card as a gift in the three available categories (the Friend Card with an annual fee of €10; Corporate Friend with a €100 yearly fee; and Family Friend with a yearly fee of €35) and receive a surprise present fabricated by fabLAB.

On both Saturday and Sunday, everyone visiting the Centro de Arte will have free access to the exhibitions on show at LABoral.

In addition, throughout the weekend the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón will host the ‘Collaborative Music and Self-sufficiency’ conference, which is part of the activities that have been taking place at LABoral since this past November within the Códigos abiertos [Open Codes] programme.

Through a series of workshops, talks and concerts, the meetings aim to reflect on the collective construction of music in a self-management framework while, at the same time, challenge the traditional separation between producer and consumer.

‘Collaborative Music and Self-sufficiency’ conference programme

Saturday 15 December
From 12 noon to 2 pm. Workshop on instrument repair, handling and construction ran by Fernando Marín, guitarist in Los Perloras, a group from Oviedo, and recurrent sound technician in the local scene.

Circuit Bending is a DIY branch (which stands for Do It Yourself) that allows for the construction and manipulation of instruments through electronic modification.
From 7 pm to 9 pm. Round table with musician and composer Pablo García (Asturias), who will base his participation on the role of consumers and producers in a self-sufficient network; with Ignacio Gallego, a professor of journalism and audiovisual communication at the University of Carlos III, Madrid, who will speak about podcasts and free radio; and Fernando Marín, musician, and Manuel Retamero from the Familiar collective, who will focus on the world of "Do It Yourself".
