Martín Freire wins the grant DKV Seguros-Álvarez Margaride with his project Behind the Scene
The work will be showcased at Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón starting June 18

Behind the Scene, by the artist Rodrigo Martín Freire (Sevilla, 1975), has been chosen the winner project of the Production Grant DKV Seguros – Álvarez Margaride in its third edition, launched by the insurance company and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón. Martín Freire will develop his project in an two-month artistic residency at Plataforma 0. Centro de Producción de LABoral, as a previous step to its presentation to the public from June 18 to August 30, 2015.
Behind the Scene is an installation where the artist will present simulations of advertising banners that, using halogen lights, will display messages and images made with bodily letters, whose interpretation will be affected by atmospheric agents, activated by means of a free hardware called Arduino. The possibility that these messages are mixed randomly, concealed, or match each other, will show the lack of connection between the original idea of the sender with the final message understood by the receiver.
According to Martín Freire, this work “is aimed at highlighting the unscrupulousness of public powers when it comes to manipulating messages. How they conceal, contradict, change or disguise the information with the purpose of controlling the behaviour of individuals that are increasingly alienated”.
Born in Seville (1975), Martín Freire is a graduate in Fine Arts by Universidad de Seville (1999) and he is currently completing a PhD programme at the Faculty of Sculpture and History of Plastic Arts of this same University. He has enjoyed a production grant at Fundación BilbaoArte.
Some of his individual exhibitions between 2004 and 2015 are El triunfo del tiempo y del desengaño, Invasores del espacio and Parque temático, at the gallery Alarcón Criado in Seville; Parachute, at gallery Paz y Comedias, Valencia. Some of his individual site specific projects are Windows cut/ for The Stile Outlet. in Seville; and Espacio disponible, at ArteLisboa´09.
He has taken part in collective exhibitions such as Inicial/08, organised by Junta de Andalucía; Colección DKV Artistas, in Seville and Madrid; La imagen y el animal, Diputación de Granada; and he has been selected for the ABC award. His worked has been showcased in fairs such as ARCO´12´13´14´15; Preview Berlin; Art Fair´10; Next´10 Chicago, in the U.S.A.; Swab, in Barcelona; and in several editions of Arte Santander.
The jury that selected the proposal, out of 50 that were presented to the call, was made up by Josep Santacreu, C.E.O. of DKV Seguros; Iñaki Martínez Antelo, Director of MARCO, Museo de Arte Contemporánea, Vigo and Ferrán Barenblit, Director of Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, CA2M, Madrid, as external jury members; Juan Bautista Peiró, Professor at Universidad en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia, and Alicia Ventura, Managing Director of Gestión Arte Ventura and Adviser and Curator of Proyecto Arte DKV Seguros, on behalf of DKV Seguros; and Lucía García, Managing Director of LABoral; and Patricia Villanueva, Exhibition Manager, on behalf of Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón. Luis Framis de Ferrater, of the Department of Communication and Corporate Responsibility of DKV Seguros acted as secretary.
La Beca de Producción DKV Seguros – Álvarez Margaride is a result of a five-year partnership agreement between LABoral and DKV Seguros. Both entities undertake to organise, produce and showcased the work selected. This call pays homage to the entrepreneur José Luis Álvarez Margaride, recognising his business commitment with Asturias and his support to art, culture and scientific research.
According to its bases and conditions, the call is aimed at selecting a work that uses new technologies, in its broader sense, created by a Spanish artist, or legal resident in Spain, born not before 1975. It is funded with 10.000€ gross -2.000€ as fees and a production budget of 8.000€-, in addition to free access to all the technical and human resources of LABoral.
