This Monday 23rd May, the performer and poet Maite Dono will open the master classes at Laboratorio de la PaLABra [Word Laboratory], an initiative by LABoral aimed at fostering literary creativity. Through the work in the Labortory, meetings with creators and contests, Laboratorio de la paLABra aims to show how poetic language is a form of industrial creation which crosses other artistic disciplines and can be found in the most unlikely places, at the reach of everyone in a recreational and enjoyable way.

Some 80 students in the fourth year of secondary education at the state secondary school, Doctor Fleming in Oviedo, who have already taken part in this initiative, along with 20 pupils from the Escuela Superior De Arte Dramático (ESAD) of Asturias will attend the first meeting with scientific poets - experts in alternative poetical production processes.

Maite Dono (1969) graduated in Performing Arts from RESAD [Royal Academy of Dramatic Art] in Madrid and has combined her theatre activity with a musical career since 1993. Her first album was entitled Corazón de Brief (1998). Her second work, O Mar Vertical (2001), was accompanied by a book of homonymous poems. She collaborates on mixed projects with other musicians and artists in different fields. Her latest music collaboration with jazz double bass player Baldo Martínez is called Sons-nús (2010).

As a poet, she has published Manta de Sombra, (Libertarias/Prodhufi, 1996), First International Prize, Libros del Egoísta; O Mar Vertical (Espiral Maior, 2000); Desilencios (2003), awarded the Esquío Prize for Poetry in Galician language; and Circus Girl (El Gaviero, 2009). She has written texts for theatre and stories. Segments of her work have also appeared in different collective books and magazines. She keeps a blog… www.maitedono.blogspot.com.

In these specialist-led sessions, the participants will explain their creative process and also evaluate the student’s work. On later dates, the project will have as main participants: Estíbaliz Espinosa (metaliterature and technology); Carmen Camacho (mixing), on 30th May; and Sandra Santana (performative action).

Conceptualised by publishing company El Gaviero Ediciones and produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón, Laboratorio de la PaLABra is a space for research, experimentation and creation dedicated to the poetic word. This education project is run for young people wishing to stimulate their poetic creativity or the power in their words with literary intention. In the words of El Gaviero, “Words invented by the students boil away in the LABoral test-tubes; these words can be definitive solutions”.
