LABoral hosts this Wednesday the presentation of the book Aprendiendo de las Cuencas

Aprendiendo de las Cuencas collects the research carried out by the architects Nacho Ruiz Allén and Sara López Arraiza about the cultural landscape of the Mining Valleys of Asturias.

LABoral hosts this Wednesday, at 7 p.m., the presentation of Aprendiendo de las Cuencas, a publication that collects the research carried out by the architects Nacho Ruiz Allén and Sara López Arraiza about the cultural landscape of the Mining Valleys of Asturias. This work resulted in an exhibition in two venues, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón and Sala de Arte del SabadellHerrero in Oviedo, from September, 2013 to February 23, 2014. The event, that will take place in the Chill-out lounge of the Art Centre, will be joined by the authors, the Regional Minister of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, Ana González, and the General Manager of Banco Sabadell, Pablo Junceda.

The research by Nacho Ruiz Allén and Sara López Arraiza, who also curated the exhibition, culminates now with the book Aprendiendo de las Cuencas. Hacia una puesta en valor del Paisaje Cultural de las Cuencas Mineras Asturianas. This work, like the exhibition, offers a new perspective of the cultural landscape generated as a consequence of the mining activity. These landscapes, that have undergone an intensive industrialisation process, have been significantly altered in a short period of time. In few decades, they have gone from being natural valleys with rural economic and social structures to introducing growing urban areas of unexpected density. This has fostered the appearance of extremely heterodox building models, like hybrid architectures, mutant artifacts that, despite the invisibility resulting from their unavoidable marginal nature, now-a-days they offer very interesting architectural lessons.

The publication Aprendiendo de las Cuencas is supported by the Government of the Principality of Asturias and Banco Sabadell Herrero. The project received a Mention for Research Works at the IX Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, and a secondary prize for Dissemination of Architecture at the XXII Edition of the Premio Asturias de Arquitectura.

The book can be acquired in Gijon at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, the Official Association of Architects of Asturias and the bookstores La Buena Letra, Central, Paradiso, Cornión, Toma 3 and Platero. In Oviedo at the Official Association of Architects of Asturias, and the bookstores Cervantes, Ojanguren, La Palma, Polledo, Maribel and Santa Teresa.
