Motiva XIV, Jornadas de Diseño de Asturias 2012 [Asturian Design Event], will hold the presentation of the Trastienda project by LABoral this Wednesday 25th April. At 5 pm in the Sala Club at the Centro Cultural Internacional [International Cultural Centre] in Avilés, Rosario Hurtado, a member of the artistic collective based in London under the name of  El Último Grito –together with Roberto Feo- will be in charge of explaining this R&D&I proposal which functions as a platform for experimental research in the area of design, while exploring questions such as what form the future object will take and what kind of relationship it will have with the Internet. El Último Grito will curate this initiative by the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón.

Motiva started in 1977 as an initiative of the Department of Advertising Graphic Design at the Escuela de Arte de Oviedo [Oviedo Art School] in response to the need to "teach and motivate" graphic design in all of the sectors involved in this activity. In this fourteenth edition, as on former occasions, there will be a wide range of activities headed by the now classic week of conferences in which this presentation is included.

Trastienda puts forward a new concept of shop-workshop which approaches design practice and the production of objects as an open and permanent research process.  The collection of objects produced by Trastienda will be the result of collaborative work by different multidisciplinary groups, made up of designers, artists and developers, who explore and reflect on the potential of the online object.

Following its launch in a seminar-workshop held last February at La Casa Encendida in Madrid, from this Wednesday 25th until 27th April LABoral will host the second work session centred on objects which will be produced using digital fabrication techniques -one of LABoral’s main lines of work in 2012. Additionally, an extensive search for formulas will be embarked upon which will document the results from this research project via a web platform to be inserted on the LABoral website (www.laboralcentrodearte.org). In developing this, the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial has received the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

This coming summer, the Trastienda project will be continued in SummerLAB, which can be attended by people who are interested by prior registration. The traditional artists’ and developers’ summer camp will take place on the 25th and 27th July and this year’s focus will be on the production of prototypes, both software and objects, along with theory and practice work sessions. The participants will be able to hack and modify the proposed objects. The final result will be a collection of objects which will be shown to the public after the summer.

The Trastienda work group is curated by El Último Grito and has Víctor Viña as its leading designer. Also participating will be Chris Sugrue, Clara Boj and Diego Díaz, de lalalab, Jacobo Alonso de Lucas, Jordi Canudas and David. In addition, the designer Susanna Tesconi, who is currently carrying out research on the development of pedagogical material in the field of digital fabrication, will also join the group.

Similarly, today at the Centro Cultural Internacional Avilés from 6.30 pm David Pello, the coordinator of fabLAB Asturias –the digital fabrication laboratory at the Centro de Arte- will present the lines of work and the  proposals for the courses  run in the area of Plataforma 0 Production Centre, which has been established as the key player in the  Trastienda project. fabLAB Asturias is a space for research, training and production with advanced digital fabrication machinery to create real and virtual prototypes. As part of its activity, it offers consultant advice, individual and collective tools, courses and workshops.

To develop and boost this lab, LABoral linked up with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) last March. In addition, through the signing of an agreement with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) -promoter of the first digital production centre in Spain- the Centre in Gijón joined the Fab Labs worldwide network.
