Digital design and fabrication, audiovisuals and an introduction to creative programming are the three working areas of the workshops and seminars organised by LABoral as part of the experimental programme in the prevention of early school leaving set in motion by the Directorate General for Professional Training, Curriculum Development and Educational Innovation at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Principality of Asturias.

This programme, in which a selection of groups of first and second-year students following the special support secondary school curriculum from 12 educational centres in Asturias will participate, aims to build new learning spaces through research projects, supporting a change in the organisational and curriculum model. In the case of LABoral, the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial seeks to develop knowledge of technical language in order to achieve a cross-cutting usage of ICTs while also fostering experimentation and critical thinking.

Teacher training through seminars will be the first step and will take place this coming 10 September. This will be followed up with work sessions for students that will be run throughout the school year 2012-2013.

Work and programme areas

1. Digital Design and Fabrication. In collaboration with Susanna Tesconi of fabLAB at LABoral.
Digital fabrication or computer aided manufacturing makes it possible to materialise physical objects from computer file designs, in this case using recycled equipment and materials. fabLAB provides first-hand knowledge of the processes and systems in which technology is an essential element, producing prototypes that allow participants to analyse the design and construction of an object, its component parts and the function it performs, thereby facilitating its usage and conservation.
Dates
Teacher training: from 10 to 12 September 2012
Students:
Intensive courses: from 8 to 11 October 2012 and from 28 January to 7 February 2013
Work sessions: on the second Monday of each month

2. Audiovisuals. TV-LAB. Experimental Television Laboratory. In collaboration with Neokinok.tv
Television experimentation brings about an understanding of the multiple realities shown in the communication media and, at the same time, allows for the creative and free expression of ideas. With this initial approach in mind, the TV-LAB project in development since October 2009 consists of a communication platform and an experimental TV studio following an educational programme.
Dates
Teacher training: from 17 to 20 September 2012
Students: 23-25 October, 27-29 November 2012 and 26-28 February, 23-25 April and May 2013

3. Introduction to creative programming. Held from LABoral
The aim of this programme is to provide the students with a creative vision of the computer on the basis of experimentation and games, promoting creative and self-taught learning and providing the foundation for beginning to programme a computer. In the initial stage the sessions will be focused on creating, manipulating and playing with image and sound, while in the second, the control possibilities of the electronics, motors, sensors, etc., will be explored.
Dates
Teacher training: from 17 to 19 September 2012
Students: on the second Monday of each month
