The Gijón International Film Festival has joined its film archives to the collection at Mediateca_Archivo [Media Library] of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón. This incorporation is regulated by an agreement, signed this Monday by Carmen Veiga, Director of the the municipal company Teatro Jovellanos SA [Gijon’s Jovellanos theatre], SA, which runs the Festival, and Rosina Gómez.-Baeza, Director of LABoral.

The accord sets out the conditions for a stable and lasting collaboration between Teatro Jovellanos and LABoral aimed at the administration, conservation and preservation of the library collection of the International Film Festival in Gijón through its inclusion in the  Mediateca of the  Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial [Centre of Art and Industrial Creation] and its consequent incorporation in the LABoral Collection during its period of validity, which has been established as five years which can be extended.

The collection of the International Film Festival in Gijón comprises audiovisual material accumulated by Teatro Jovellanos over the recent editions and, more specifically, the actual Collection of Festival Selections, which are joined with the archives documenting the Meetings with Directors and Press Conferences. The trajectory of this cinema festival and its impressive track record has led to this competition becoming a leading cultural event in the European film scene, which has also enabled it to draw together an extremely rich collection - the result of the intensive work carried out in the most recent years.

In this way, the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial takes a further step in the building up of its Archive of Asturian Artists, incorporating into the current collection –an extensive database for consultation on biographical and professional information on visual artists born or resident in Asturias whose work has been developed from 1950 onwards- the Archive of  Film Directors and Producers in Asturias.

Presently, under the guidance of its Director, José Luis Cienfuegos, the Film Festival is in the process of compiling all material originating from Asturian film directors. So far, the directors Tom Fernández, Sergio Gutiérrez Sánchez, Lucinda Torre, Ángeles Muñiz, Alberto Arce, the Prada brothers, Gonzalo Tapia, Julio de la Fuente, Igor Iglesias, Ramón Lluis Bande and Amanda Castro, among others, have confirmed their joining the  project and the rights transfer of materials.

All of the resources that are now being incorporated will be available to the general public and researchers, once they have been catalogued and classified, in Mediateca_Archivo at LABoral  - a space dedicated to information and the dissemination of modern art, as well as the creation by the most experimental cultural industries. Its primary objective is to enable access to documented materials, whatever their medium (printed or digital), and audiovisual collections representative of culture and contemporary creation, placing a special interest in the field of art-science-society-technology. The Mediateca_Archivo aims to be, on the one hand, a place for interaction with the public who come to LABoral to enjoy its exhibitions and activities and, on the other hand, a key documentation centre for specialised research.

Both institutions have committed to collaborate on the tasks of archiving, description, cataloguing and classification, and where appropriate, the digitalisation of the audiovisual documents which will now be incorporated in the Mediateca.

Only a few months ago, these resources were joined by all of the archives from the cutting-edge programme of the Teatro de la Laboral [Laboral Theatre], since its beginning in 2007, incorporating audio, video, photographic documentation as well as all the material related to the works performed on stage.
