On Wednesday 24 April, Motiva 2013, Jornadas de Diseño de Asturias [Asturian Design Conferences] will host the presentation of the projects currently underway at fabLAB Asturias, the Digital Fabrication Laboratory at the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón. From 11.30 am at the Escuela Superior de Arte de Oviedo [School of Art of Oviedo], fabLAB Asturias technical director David Pello will present the lines of work and the course proposals that are being developed in this area of Plataforma 0 Production Centre, which is set up as a space for research, training and production with advanced digital fabrication machinery to create prototypes.

Motiva was started in 1977 as an initiative by the Department of Advertising  Graphics of the Escuela de Arte de Oviedo [School of Art of Oviedo] due to the need to "teach and motivate" graphic design in all sectors involved in this activity. Different activities will take place in this edition which will be headed by the now classic week of conferences of which this presentation is a part.

Additionally, on Wednesday from 4.30 pm until 7.30 pm, LABoral will hold a practical workshop on digital fabrication, preferably for students from the art schools in Oviedo and Avilés, which is aimed at fostering creativity, experimentation and shared learning. The activity basically consists in making the design of an object and the fabrication of its prototype to get a basic knowledge of the functioning of a Digital Fabrication Laboratory, the available machinery and its possibilities.

For the development and launch of fabLAB Asturias, LABoral teamed up with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in March 2012. In addition, the centre in Gijón was incorporated into the worldwide network of Fab Labs by signing an agreement with the Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Catalunya [Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia] (IAAC), promoter of the first digital production centre created in Spain.
