LABoral announces an artist residency to produce a project on locative audio

Locative Audio permits to locate a sound in a physical space

LABoral, through its Plataforma Cero. Centre for Research, Production and Resources, has issued a call for proposals to select an artist-in-residence who, in the space of two months, will develop a work based on locative audio. The accomplished work will be shown at the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation in Gijón in the year 2012. This open call is framed within the Narrativas espaciales [Spatial Narratives] project, which includes a workshop, exhibition and the above mentioned production residency.

Locative audio is the capacity to locate a sound in a physical space and reproduce it when the users –equipped with a Smartphone or similar device- find themselves physically present in this place. Locative audio creates virtual sound spaces which underlie the physical world and has multiple uses: from touristic guides to targeted advertising, on to navigation aids for the blind, the exchange of audio files and the reclamation of these spaces.

Narrativas espaciales [Spatial Narratives] is a programme by LABoral, in collaboration with SAT-Society for Arts and Technology (Montreal), No Tours (Vigo) and GPS museum (Murcia), based on locative audio and its narrative possibilities. This initiative gives special importance to analysing the political role played by sound within the public space. The workshop is held from 1st to 5th November 2011 and the participants, among which the selected artist for the residency will be present, will work in it with the technical resources available and collaborate with producers from different creation platforms, experimenting with script-writing, audio recordings and the development of projects with which to practise the newly acquired skills.

The results from this workshop will be presented to the public at the Art Centre between 25th November of this year and 13th February in 2012. The exhibit will also include three European projects on locative media carried out at Hanger, Barcelona.

The open call for residency is aimed at creators of any nationality interested in working at LABoral on the development of the above locative audio project starting from 1st November.

The closing time and date for the receipt of submissions will be at 2pm on Thursday 15th September in 2011. The decision will be made known before 30th September, 2011.
