This Friday 11th, a debate on the role of women in the art system shall provide the opportunity for the presentation of the Asociación Mujeres en las Artes Visuales Contemporáneas (MAV) [Association of Women in the Visual Arts] in Asturias. The event will take place from 12 noon in the Chill-out Space at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, with entrance free of charge, and the participation of Rocío de la Villa, President of MAV and art critic; the artist, Carmen Cantón; and the Director of LABoral, Rosina Gómez-Baeza.

Last November in the Sala Amárica in Vitoria, the association MAV started its travelling exhibition of several round tables for debate aimed at giving visibility to the contribution of women in the Spanish art system, at investigating the situation of professionals in each region and also at co-ordinating new networks which encourage collaborative channels for the implementation of policies in favour of equal opportunities. According to the association, the end of sexual discrimination in the art system requires the opening of dialogue channels between professionals and associations in order to design strategies and tactics that will transform public and private institutions working in the field of art and culture. The organisation of the itinerant Round-table discussions was made possible by the aid given by the Ministry of Culture under Promoción al Arte MCU [Aid for the promotion of Spanish Art and support for new trends in the arts].

MAV has presently more than 230 associates including a wide range of professionals in the visual arts sector in Spain: artists, critics, collectors, curators, designers of exhibition mounting, educators, directors, art centre co-ordinators and technicians, editors, researchers, art gallery owners and directors, art managers and specialised journalists. Established in May 2009, the association attempts to demonstrate sexism in the Spanish art system through its Observatory. Also, by means of its Centre of Documentation, the association fosters the knowledge and research on contributions made by women in contemporary art.

CREAR BOSQUES

To take advantage of this event and the participation of the Asturian artist Carmen Cantón in it, LABoral will also present the project Crear bosques [Creating Forests] - an artistic action that will be on show from 28th April in the exterior of LABoral.

The artist Carmen Cantón has offered to plant trees under commission in the garden at LABoral. The Project originated from a performance based on a work in progress that started on 21st March 2000 in Monte Deva, Gijón. The action consists of the compilation of sponsorship applications and the management of the action –with the considerable involvement of museums, art centres, associations and NGOs– as well as the tree planting, which returns to objecthood in its transformation into a location map that allows sponsors to visit their tree if they should so wish. To date, a significant number of actions have been carried out in places such as Asturias and Galicia in Spain, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Germany.
