On Friday 27 December LABoral will host the I Self Publishing in Asturias conference which is intended as the starting point in establishing a network of different creators involved in the editing of publications on a DIY (Do it Yourself) basis. The initiative is also a way of connecting the Asturian Artists’ Archive with this type of work which spans illustration, text editing and subversive information. Also, fanzines, both digital and printed, that are held in the collections of Mediateca_Archivo at LABoral will be shown.

From 4 pm to 8 pm, the Chill-Out space at the art centre will host the different speeches, presentations and a fanzine market. In addition, there will be a concert, at six in the evening, by Proyector Flüjendorf, with live sounds that become visible when vibrations are generated in a fluid.  These sounds are created using a range of instruments: didgeridoo, kalimba, guitar, percussion, korg kaoos, korg microkorg, nose whistle, flute, fujara, kou xiang, bansuri...

Throughout the day the animated short film Cómo hacer un fanzine [How to create a fanzine], which Elena Duque made in 2010 for the Autoplacer festival (at CA2M) with the help of Jerseys Para Los Monos, will be projected on a loop.

Orfidal. The Orfidal staff are Helena Exquis and Astor Nubenegra, friends and Asturian expatriates (in Barcelona and Madrid, respectively).  They have been producing Orfidal since 2010. The Escuela Moderna, John Waters, Harmoni Korine, Boris Vian, The Make Up, Paco Alcázar, Derribos Arias... are just some of the names which populated the list that appeared in the first issue of the fanzine.  This first edition was followed by another two in less than a year, and that’s how they have continued working until now, working to get the sixth issue out,  printed by Risograph in two inks. With one eye on American counterculture, another on the 60s Britain and a third on post punk, they attempt to recover the essence of those old fanzines abound with articles on forgotten punk groups, Pakistani freakbeat and drawings by wicked Czechoslovak artists.

Nueva Escocia, Pablo E. Prendes used to produce the Tempus Fugit zine. Now he has released Nueva Escocia, a beautiful fanzine in a binder with eight sheets showing extraordinary taste. Skaters, tears, forked tongues and lots of obsession. Pablo’s frenetic activity in fanzines is unstoppable. This Asturian mercilessly carves up politicians, film icons and buildings in his collages. At the Self Publishing in Asturias event, Pablo will present the sixth issue of Nueva Escocia, a clear tribute to Dadaism which has greatly influenced him.

The Participants
La Flecha Negra, with her fanzine Modo Shuffle. Following a nostalgic feeing, in this fanzine she mixes two of the things she loves: listening to music and drawing. Each of the drawings is accompanied with song lyrics.  The first issue was produced on her own with the random use of a portable music player; the following editions have been made in collaboration with friends who are music lovers and illustrators. The Flecha Negra has been doing silk-screen printing since 2006. At its post all the DIY tools you could ever imagine can be found, from netting to do Petit point to printed “bottoms of cabinets”, including download codes.

Temporal zine. In September 2012 Temporal Fanzine was launched by the Asturian band Los Bonsáis. Its primary goal is to bring back the spirit of the indie pop fanzines printed on paper which were so popular in the 80s and 90s and so scarce now. Temporal tells us about groups, labels, and people they like most (both contemporary and classic). You can find interviews, articles and illustrations in the zine. All of them closely related to and influenced by pop culture. In little over a year seven issues have been published.

Aborto Fanzine. Aborto is a film fanzine, expensive toys that I like and gimmicks that come to mind. I try not to make it too depressing. It costs 50 cents but I may well accept a fanzine in exchange”. http://abortofanzine.blogspot.com.es/

Almendra Mística. “I wanted to start it as a fanzine with a given theme for each issue and it got out of control. I like Japanese things, ugly stuff, music that’s kind of special and I sometimes do interviews.”

Peñita Brava. “Peñita Brava is the result of the buzzing of a mosquito. When you wake up and can’t get back to sleep, and in an idle way you need to do something, and that’s what Peñita Brava is, but for good people. Like anything, only the things that we like, also… it’s a mental pastime!

Soma Records zine. Julieta is 17 years old and plays in the band from Santander, Meryl Streep.  She produces the small fanzine Soma Records, 100% hand-made and very reminiscent of Riot Grrrl of the 90s. She also has a blog on tumblr “Fun-zines” where she shares her collection with the world.

The Cosmonauta Tropical. The cosmonauta tropical [Tropical Cosmonaut] is one of our most successful Galician fanzines. It’s as if the first issues of Siniestro Total had never disappeared  http://cosmonautatropical.blogspot.com.es/
