This coming Saturday 10 December, the Chill-out space at LABoral will host Bcollector, 1st Roundtable on Collecting.  From 11 am to 2 pm, four renowned art collectors -Alicia Aza, Fernando Fernández, Narcís Pujol and Jaime Sordo- will talk about their real-life experiences on what a collection is, how to create one, sharing their knowledge from a variety of perspectives. Many major collectors started up in the world of collecting with great difficulty: when their owners were students with limited financial resources, making installment payments without a clear course of action. How to approach the development of a collection, their concerns on how to focus the collection, where to store it, how to conserve it, the taxation and red tape it generates, and finally, how a collection can be promoted in such a way that a piece does not die once it has been acquired and, in turn, becomes a “live organism” are some of the questions to be discussed at this roundtable.

The event, moderated by Elena Vozmediano, art critic of the newspaper El Mundo’s magazine, El Cultural, and President of the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC), demonstrates a strong commitment to the better understanding of today’s art and culture, one of the objectives underlying its activity.

Coinciding with this event, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón, will make available a documentation point in Chill-out where those attending will be able to directly access the Asturian Artists Archive, an extensive database for consulting biographical and professional information, with images and descriptive texts on artists born or resident in Asturias who have developed their work since 1950. The Asturian Artists Archive aims to act as the driving force behind creation and contemporary culture in Asturias. Also, a wide range of information, bibliographies, catalogues on matters related to collecting will be included.

The personal accounts by Alicia Aza, Fernando Fernández, Narcís Pujol and Jaime Sordo will give the people attending –actual collectors, potential collectors, the interested public and public professionals- a first-hand insight into four experiences of collecting, which have been built on very different criteria, including the purpose of their collection, how the collectors promoted their collections and what they gained out of this.

BCOLLECTOR:1st Roundtable on Collecting also seeks to highlight  the generosity of the collectors who, far from looking for financial gain on each one of the works they own, actually strive to see they are enjoyed by as many people as possible.

This roundtable is part of the programme for the ALNORTE Contemporary Art Week, which aims to foster artistic collecting as an engine for the export and enrichment of the visual arts.
