The playwright Rodrigo García presents the first installation produced by the Sound LAB

LABoral presents this Friday, March 21, Incomplete study on my claustrophobia which started suddenly one night when I was 41 in a van in Seoul, an installation by the Asturian-Argentinean playwright R0drigo García, developed during his residency at the Sound LAB of the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial de Gijón. This is the first piece produced in this new space of Plataforma 0. Centro de Producción, which aims to foster and provide with technical and creative support the contemporary art practices related with sound following four lines of action: Production, exposition, research and education.
Coproduced with the National Drama Centre of Montpellier-Languedoc-Rousillon, whose director is Rodrigo García, the installation presents a series of motorbike helmets which are used by the artist as the vehicle of narration for a piece that, as its very title indicates and as usual in his work, the autobiographical is used by the author to explore certain aspects of human condition.
Incomplete study on my claustrophobia which started suddenly one night when I was 41 in a van in Seoul presents seven reactive sound environments which, as a response to breathing and the sounds produced when the user wears the helmet, generate a story and textures that appear and disappear. Each helmet involves a particular setup and listening experience generated through a series of speakers and surface transducers. The techniques used in each case represent, altogether, a compilation of the various contemporary ways to work with sound, from binaural simulation to granular synthesis, including field recordings and also different models of audio analysis encompassed within the so-called machine listening.
“A motorbike helmet is an object which I do not specially like and, may be because of this, I chose it as the suitable micro-space to host the sound piece or pieces. Motorbike helmets that sound, each one with a different story, with its obsession, with a sound which, depending on the person receiving it, may end up being a torture, a game or a bedtime story. The audience or the receivers always stage the plays.
"I am a theater artist, secondly, says Rodrigo García. Firstly, I am a writer. I guess this installation shows where I come from, in the sense that these elements on space are similar to a stage design and the result is a dialogue of the deaf, a system of incommunication”.
Rodrigo García (Buenos Aires, 1964) Is a theatre director and stage director and set designer. Founder of the company La Carnicería Teatro, he lives in Spain since 1986, where he has developed mosto f his theater career. He has collaborated with, among other institutions and festivals, National Drama Centre (Spain), the Festival d’Avignon or the Venice Biennale. In 2009 he was awarded the Premio Europa Nueva Realidad Teatral. Currently he is the director of the National Drama Centre of Montpellier-Languedoc-Rousillon.
Rodrigo García advances over the minefield which is the world, testing it, questioning it, and forcing it until it collapses onto the theatre. This dangerous splashing results into a fragile and restless art, an art of reflection and fight. Rejecting the head-in-the-sand policy, he encourages us to keep the hope in the delights of drama. As a proof o future happy and emancipating riots. For several years now, he nows how to combine success and the sirens of commercial fame. Irreducible to the fashion that surrounds and praises him, in order to disgrace him more strongly when when the wave has already passed, he was able to stop the spiral of exponential production and prioritise craftsmanship in a creation process trying always to get deeper.
