From Friday 2nd March, the renowned Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda will present at LABoral a new site-specific version of his acclaimed audiovisual concert, Datamatics, a proposal exploring the potential to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world. data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version] has been designed specifically for the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation in Gijón and is an artistic reorchestration of this work in process which Ikeda has been developing since 2006. Since that time, datamatics has been presented all over the world as a series of experiments in different formats: audiovisual concerts, installations, publications and albums.

data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version] is a project which has been specifically adapted for the monumental character of the Projects’ Room at   LABoral, where it will be on view until 21st January 2013.  In this large-scale audiovisual installation, the Japanese artist presents the visitor with a totally immersive and sensory experience. Using five projectors, a single and large video image is projected directly onto the floor of the large gallery space, immersing the visitor’s body, sight and hearing. The opening of this big installation forms part of the programme celebrating the fifth anniversary of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial which takes place this 30th March.

Using pure data as a source for sound and visual compositions, datamatics [ver.2.0] combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space resulting in a powerful and breathtakingly accomplished work. Driven by the same primary principles, but conceptually deconstructing and re-composing its original elements –transformations, visualisations and sonifications of a vast amount of scientific data, such as the human genome DNA, astronomical coordinates of stars in the universe, molecular structures of protein and even data on the architecture of datamatics itself – this new work, data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version], creates a kind of  “meta-datamatics”, with which the artist delves into the challenge of exploring the thresholds of our perceptions.

Ryoji Ikeda centres his work on the basic aspects of sound and visual elements, such as light, by making use of both mathematical precision and aesthetics. He has built a reputation as one of the few international creators who works convincingly not only with visual media, but also with sound media, elaborately orchestrating sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical concepts in immersive live performances and installations.
