Although the celebration will be held throughout the year, the Centre of Art and Industrial Creation in Gijón has prepared a packed programme of activities which culminate in the weekend of 30th March, the date which marks the fifth anniversary of the Centre’s opening.

As a prelude, on Thursday 22nd, (ende) -an audiovisual project by the Asturian filmmakers Luis Argeo and Ramón Lluis Bande- is opened and put on display in the different spaces of LABoral’s  Sala Nueva [New Room] until 30th April.

(ende) has arisen from a journey, a road map, which in this first release is based in western Asturias. The series is a collection of film portraits of different people –randomly chosen during this journey – who live in areas which in some way represent a border; they mark a frontier. In this way, Argeo and Bande raise a series of reflections on the concept of territory and the cultural and social transformations that can be seen along it during short trips.

On Friday 30th, from 8 pm onwards, the opening of the exhibition Visualizar el sonido [Visualising Sound], curated by Fiumfoto, will take place. Through the works by ten artists –including the Asturian Daniel Romero (.tape.)-, this show explores the synthesis between image and sound, the different graphical and physical sound representations, and its evolution in the context of contemporary art.

As part of this opening, LABoral will offer visitors the presentation of Rapsodia [Rhapsody] by Fernando Gutiérrez + .Tape. and a live audiovisual piece by one of the artists from this exhibition -David Letellier, known as Kangding Ray- who will present OR a/v live set.

Coinciding with this exhibition, El arte y su sonido [Art and its Sounds], a project by José Manuel Costa in collaboration with Juanjo Palacios aimed at capturing the sounds of an art centre, is started. The first session will take place in the afternoon of Saturday 31st, during which the art critic and curator José Manuel Costa will present the project and lead a theory session. This will be followed by a roundtable debate on sound art with the exhibition’s artists and curators and the artists participating in the project.

An hour earlier, at 7 pm on Friday, the artist Paula Pin will present Concierto fotosintético [Photosynthetic Concert], a project which has been developed during her artist residency at Plataforma 0. LABoral’s Production Centre. Concierto fotosintético investigates and produces sensors and interfaces which aim to create new ways of representing the interactions between humans and nature, generating with all this a sound ecosystem. This work received the Artistic Production Incentive award of Vida 13.2, the Art and Artificial Life International Awards held by Fundación Telefónica [the Telefonica Foundation], in its 2011 edition.

The fifth anniversary will also provide the occasion for the presentation of Serendipia [Serendipity] by Helena Torres, a work produced at LABoral following its selection as part of the Narrativas espaciales [Spatial Narratives] programme, promoted by Plataforma 0. Production Centre in collaboration with SAT-Société des Arts Technologiques [Society for Arts and Technology] (Montreal), No Tours (Vigo) and GPSmuseum (Murcia). This project is based on locative audio and its narrative possibilities. Serendipia presents a fragmented story, recorded in sound pieces located at El Sucu Cemetery, which was opened in 1876, with the intention of solving a crime committed in Gijón at the end of the nineteenth century. The wander through this space, made up by present-day tracks of past events, proposes a gradual approach to the political, social and historical climate of the beginning of the modern age in order to create a historical point of view of the present. This sound walk is scheduled for Saturday 31st, from 12 noon to 2 pm, at El Sucu Cemetery, where the narrative is located.

ecoLAB, the laboratory for experimentation in ecology, art and open electronics at LABoral, will hold its monthly session on Saturday 31st.   From 4 pm to 7 pm in the afternoon, the Spring Planting activity, especially designed for children and families, will take place. To celebrate spring, two areas in the Patio Sur [South Yard] are prepared and seeded with local fruit and vegetables, oat seeds and with wildflowers.  The artist Joaquín Villa will accompany the participants on a guided tour to learn about the plants and seeds. In addition, the artists Andy Gracie and Paula Pin have fabricated a microscope in fabLAB Asturias (LABoral’s digital fabrication laboratory) from recycled materials, which allows you to see the microorganisms in the water from the well.
