Winner Project at the Fifth Edition of the LABjoven_Experimenta Award, Generadores de sombras [Shadow Generators], involves, in the words of the Asturian artist Cristina Busto, the start of a line of work which combines visual arts and video, consisting of video-installations, with its final stage being an audiovisual performance.

The work will be shown at LABoral until September the 17th and is divided into three phases. First of all, Cristina Busto turns the cube of rear projection screens within the gallery into her own studio. After a period of testing and a live visuals session, the cube was then opened to the public, thus becoming a video-installation and making the traces and signs of the creative process visible.

Cristina Busto works with live video, exploring the effects of light on refracting elements. She co-opts shadows as a form of direct projection in order to compose landscapes using objects, cardboard templates, plastic carrier bags and broken toys. She also uses found objects, giving a new function to the useless objects that surround us and represent our consumer society. In this way she engages in a brand of aesthetic recycling, informing a new poetic and fictive reality through these objects.

The members of the public are made to feel part of the work, to physically and conceptually occupy the space as a means of understanding how to generate fiction through images. Magic is based on tricks; magic is beauty, but also ignorance and a lack of understanding of processes. Through this multiple piece Cristina Busto seeks to engage the spectator’s empathy with the artistic profession without overlooking an on going research into light and the moving image.

The LABjoven_Experimenta Award, jointly organised by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and the Social Welfare and Equality Department of the Principality of Asturias, celebrates its fifth edition in the year 2011 and is dedicated to experimental artistic projects (installations, multimedia installations, actions, interventions and any other creative process) specifically conceived for its setting up at LABoral. Aimed at Asturian artists or collectives, born or resident in the Principality of Asturias, or up to the second generation of descendants of Asturian emigrants, aged 35 or under, it provides 11,800 € for the production of the selected proposal.

In previous editions, the following artists and projects were awarded: Pablo de Soto with Situation Room (2007); Fernando Gutiérrez with Crisálidas [Chyrsalides] (2008); Alicia Jiménez with En barbecho [Left Fallow] (2009); and Adrián Cuervo with Dédalo España (2010).
