LABoral and Gijón International Film Festival have launched the competition for filMO, a pocket-sized film festival made with mobile devices, such as telephones and low resolution cameras, designed and promoted by the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón since its first edition. The festival is aimed at fostering creativity and critical thinking among teenagers and young creators in a society which is constructed and understood from the core perspective of the digital image.
Continuing with the line of work in previous editions, the setting for filMO will be Gijón Film Festival. From 15th to 23rd November - the dates when the 51st edition will be held - participants will be able to film their works making use of everything that surrounds them as the raw material for their films.
For its fifth edition, filMO includes the following sections:
filMO Amateur Film: section for pieces made with non-HD cameras, telephones and/or micro cameras.
Invited Guests: section reserved for those invited to the festival, directors, critics and film professionals in general who decide to take part in the competition.
Awards: the filMO Amateur Film section of the festival is awarded with two prizes. Firstly, the jury prize of 500 euros, and secondly, the public award totaling 300 euros. The jury, which is formed by several experts involved in the world of moving image as either critics or professionals, will also be joined by members from the LABoral and Gijón International Film Festival teams. The public award and the jury prize can overlap.
filMO has its own Vimeo channel (https://vimeo.com/user7631232) for competing in the festival, where users will post their works after registering in the group and also where the public will be able to vote once registered. The final works should be handed in before 12 at night on Monday 2 December. The award will be announced on Friday 20 December.

FICXLAB Programme
In addition, the 51st edition of Gijón International Film Festival will hold the new section FICXLAB, organised by LABoral Art Centre and the international film festival with the aim of giving visibility to types of images whose halfway position between visual arts and film make it difficult to find a place in either commercial cinemas or other film-based forums.
This double programme presents works by renowned authors in experimental cinema. The aim is to bring to Gijón the main names in the genre - the key figures for understanding its evolution since the 1960s to the present day. The sessions will be presented by Paco Algarín from the magazine Lumière, and Alfredo Aracil, the curator of Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español [Video Universe_the Other Spanish Audiovisual Scene].

Programme dedicated to presenting the work of specific distributors and international producers. Lux is one of the major distributors of experimental cinema and video art. As well as acting as a platform for artists such as Otolith Group and Luke Fowler, who have been nominated for prestigious prizes, including the Turner, LUX has developed its own style, a special way of working with memory, territory and experimental audiovisual tradition.

Roundtable
Alberto Gracia, director of O quinto evanxeo de Gaspar Hauser [The Fifth Gospel of Gaspar Hauser], winner of the Fipresci award at the Rotterdam Festival 2013; Víctor Berlín from Plat; Chema González, Head of Cultural Activities of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), and Alfredo Aracil, Curator of Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español will come together for this debate in which they will address the production and distribution of new Spanish film and the international context of experimental cinema.

The international recognition that the festivals of Locarno and Rotterdam have bestowed, respectively, on Albert Serra and Alberto Gracia this 2013, highlights the work of two radical directors for who aesthetics is almost a political question: two pathways when it comes to joining images which, while having a certain formal similarities, take a different course.
This year fate seems to have brought together two films which, in some way, work on the necessity of writing and communicating history differently.
Història de la meva mort, Albert Serra, 2013, 148'
The meeting of Casanova and Dracula in a Swiss castle brings along the clash between a century about to end and another that has only just started. The end of the Enlightenment with its search to attract the public gives way to Romanticism, a way of being far removed from the Light: secretive, alarmist and violent. A film that earned him the Golden Leopard award at the last Locarno Festival.

The enigmatic story of wild child Kaspar Hauser, who appeared in Nuremberg in 1828, is the backdrop for the first film by Alberto Gracia, winner of the FIPRESCI award at the last Rotterdam Festival.
