LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and Gijón International Film Festival have signed a collaboration agreement with the purpose of designing and producing a series of film screenings and activities that link film with visual arts. This agreement involving the introduction of video art and experimental cinema in the context of a film festival like the one in Gijón aims to build a public that is interested in the less conventional expressions of moving image in the medium and long term.

The first release of this section will be launched at the festival’s upcoming edition –celebrating its 51st this year- and will be held from 15 to 23 November. With the name of FICXLAB, the section seeks to give visibility to types of images whose halfway position between visual arts and film make it difficult to find a niche in either commercial cinemas or in film-based forums which are more focused on a narrative, almost literary type.

The programme consists of various sessions, drawing together Spanish films produced in 2013 which have won awards in international festivals such as those at Locarno and Rotterdam, works by the English distributer LUX and others that fit in the experimental film tradition of the 60s and 70s.

In addition, as a competitive event LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and Gijón International Film Festival are presenting the exhibition Universo vídeo_el otro audiovisual español [Video Universe: The Other Spanish Audiovisual Scene] in the art centre’s Mediateca Expandida [Expanded Mediatheque] and at Sala Astragal in Gijón. Eight Spanish authors selected from the online PLAT archive compete for a two-week production residency at LABoral Centro de Arte during 2014.

As part of FICXLAB, and with the collaboration of Gijón Creativo [Gijón Creative], a competition has been launched to give a graphic identity to this new section through the creation of a logotype. The open call is targeted at artists and designers either born or resident in Asturias who belong to the Gijón Creativo platform or LABoral’s Asturian Artists’ Archive at the time of publication of these rules.  The proposals, which should be sent by e-mail in .jpg or .pdf format to the e-mail address gijoncreativo@gijon.es, must be submitted before 12 midnight on Thursday 24 October 2013.

A jury, formed by a representative of FICX, another from LABoral Centro de Arte in Gijón and a member from the City Council team linked to the development of the Gijón Creativo project will select the winner based on the originality and creativity of the design, the stated explanation behind the work and on how easily it can be applied to different communication elements. The jury will announce their decision on 25 November 2013 and the award will come with a prize of € 800 gross.
