A total of eleven short films have been nominated for the filMO Re-make/Re-model awards, the third edition of the pocked-sized film festival organised by LABoral. The films will be screened as part of Gijón’s International Film Festival, being held from 18 to 26 of this November, at an event which will take place at the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto, Gijón [Former Jovellanos Institute Cultural Centre], on Tuesday 22 November at 7.45 pm.

filMO is a pocket-sized  film festival made with mobile devices, such as telephones or low resolution cameras, initially arising out of LABoral’s LABmóvil project: a public participation platform based on the production and exchange of audiovisual and digital content. The festival aims to promote the development of creative talent and engage the critical involvement of teenagers and young creators in a society which is constructed and understood from the core perspective of the digital image. Around one hundred works have been presented in the current edition.

FINALISTS

A jury formed by Benjamin Weil,  Activities Director of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, José Luis Cienfuegos, Director of Gijón’s International Film Festival, Lucía García, Manager of LABoral and Alfredo Aracil and Elena Duque from the Mediateca_Archivo [Media Libraries] at LABoral have selected the finalist videos on the basis of their interest and originality, the way they reflect the spirit of  filMO -in other words, supporting amateur audiovisual creation- and on their artistic use of the mobile.

Each one of the three sections that make up the festival -filMo amateur film, minute-sequence and invited guests- is awarded with two prizes. Firstly, the jury prize of 500 euros, and secondly, the public award amounting to 300 euros.

The following submissions have been selected:

filMO Amateur Film category

  1. La puerta del laberinto [The Labyrinth Door] by Ángel Méndez & Astor Castro
  2. Swamp Angels Redemption (Part I), de Luzartica
  3. Ferias de Santiago [The Santiago Fairs] by Flaman
  4. Del otro lado del valle (lluvia sobre Trípoli) [From the Other Side of the Valley (rain upon Tripoli)] by Yholfran Ochoa

  2. David vs. Goliat, by la cámara frigorífica
  3. 3. El relevo by la cámara frigorífica
  4. Mujer escribiendo en el suelo [Woman Writing on the Floor] by Patos Calvos.

In addition, filMO also features the Public Award for the unofficial section by public vote.

All of the finalist pieces will be screened on Tuesday 23 November at 7.45 pm at the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto as part of the Gijón International Film Festival. During the same session the three pieces in the  Firmas invitadas [Invited Guests] category of filMO, made by Chus Domínguez, Pablo García Canga and Rubén García López, will also be projected and the prize-winning work selected by the jury for this section will be announced. Voting for the Invited Guests public award, via the filMO Vimeo channel, is open from Friday 11 to Friday 18 November 2011, and the results of this will be announced at this event.
