Via fabLAB Asturias; Experimental electronics and software; Territory: local, heritage, community; and New spaces, formats and tools for participation.

Banco Sabadell Foundation and DKV support LABoral
Fundación Banco Sabadell [the Banco Sabadell Foundation] and DKV Seguros have shown their commitment to the LABoral project by backing the programme that the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón has designed for 2013. Both entities will finance some of the art centre’s activities at the start of the collaboration which will be continued in the future.

Since 1994, the mission of the Banco Sabadell Foundation has been to give support to institutions, preserve heritage, cooperate with the arts (musical, performing and visual) and enhance the recognition of outstanding young people in the area of innovation and research. The Foundation is presided by the lecturer of Theory and Contemporary Art  at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Miquel Molins, who is also the Director of the Banco Herrero Foundation, the brand under which this banking group operates in Asturias and León.

Over the coming year, the Banco Sabadell Foundation will sponsor two of the exhibitions which will be shown at the art centre. This will be Aprendiendo de las cuencas [Learning from Las Cuencas], a research project and exhibition on the cultural landscape of the Asturian mining areas; and Coleccionismo de creación [Creation Collecting], a show curated by Joan Fontcuberta which presents the transit of creation collecting to creation as collecting.

DKV, the European leader in health insurance, extends its programme of supporting young artistic creation in Spain with the beginning of its cooperation with LABoral. Both entities will jointly announce a Production Grant for the realisation of a project by a Spanish artist or resident in Spain, who at the closing date of the proposal call is not over 35 years old. The results from the residency will materialise into an exhibition which will take place at the Galería de Exposiciones [Exhibitions Gallery] at the Centro de Arte from 21 June to 22 September 2013. This call pays homage to the figure of José Luis Álvarez Margaride, born in Gijón and president of the Spanish subsidiary of DKV until his death in 2010, for his commitment to business in Asturias, and his interest in art, culture and scientific research.

Additionally, throughout 2013 the art centre will strengthen its collaboration with Telefónica, a company that has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the La Laboral Foundation since its establishment through the Telefónica Foundation.

Together with Telefónica I+D, a call for proposals for Next Things will be launched once again, out of which a project will be selected which links art and technology, unleashing the enormous potential in the mixing of creativity and the vision of artists with powerful open hardware technologies.

Both LABoral and the Telefónica Foundation will work together on the production of works and exhibitions which will be shown at the art centre in Gijón and in the spaces at the Telefónica Foundation in Madrid and Latin America. This line encompasses the work that Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda will show at Espacio de Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, which is an evolution of the production Datamatics. data.tecture [5 SXGA+ version] on exhibit at LABoral until this last September.

Another production by LABoral, the exhibition eCLIPSe. [retro]perspectiva en 50 fases del vídeo musical [[retro]perspective of the music video in 50 steps], will be exhibited at the Centro Fundación Telefónica in Lima in the autumn of 2013. The Telefónica Foundation has given its VIDA 14 Award, the International Art and Artificial Life Competition which every year recognises the work of pioneering artists in the domains of art, science and new technologies, to another LABoral production. This is n-Polytope, a performance-installation by North American artist Chris Salter in which the artist employs today’s existing technology to reinterpret the spectacular architectural environments imagined by the Greek architect and composer Iannis Xenakis in the 1970s and 80s of the last century.
