The day after tomorrow, on Wednesday 27th April, LABoral will celebrate International Book Day with 260 nursery and primary school children who will be taking part in the different activities organised by the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial to commemorate this event. Workshops on a wide range of subjects, ‘gymkhanas’, storytelling and a book hospital are some of the activities with which LABoral aims to bring closer the creative process that is hidden behind any book.

The 260 children, between the ages of three and six, from infant and primary schools in El Bibio and San Eutiquio in Gijón and the Colegio Público La Gesta [state school] in Oviedo will come to LABoral accompanied by their parents and teachers. Between 10 am to 12 noon, by participating in the workshops and activities designed to stimulate reading and learning in an artistic environment, the school children will be able to explore the technologies employed in the production of books and the various tools used for reading, which has produced a much richer current panorama than in the 20th century. The workshops will be led by the collective, Volvoreta, the Asturian artist Pablo Iglesias and members of the mediation team at LABoral.

Also, from tomorrow, Tuesday, until this coming Friday, the workshop Botaniq, archivando experiencias [Botaniq. Archiving Experiences] will be held in Mediteca_Archivo [Media Library] at LABoral. Taking an exhibition at LABoral as a case for study and archiving, this workshop addresses the problem of conserving digital art, bio-art, performance and net art.

ACTIVITIES

Workshop Prelibris. Colectivo Volvoreta, Madrid [the Volvoreta collective]
Focusing attention in a personal way on the suggestive books of the work PreLibris by Bruno Munari, this is a workshop on book creation, in which the children begin their personal adventure with books almost without knowing how to tell apart the letters and equally unaware that a book is also an object. This activity seeks to make the participants aware of the book “object”, playing with textures, different colours and succeeding in producing their own creation and their own story.
Volvoreta is a multidisciplinary collective made up of different specialists. Its manager and coordinator is Sofía Alaínez, entertainer and reading trainer for the last 10 years. http://www.volvoretas.com/

Gymkhana in the Mediateca at LABoral. The Mediation Team.
Using an active and participative methodology, the children will be taught how to look for books in the media library. Once they find them, they will be able to take it to a story-teller entrusted with bringing life to the story.
The mediation team at LABoral is centred on dealing with the public and its activity aims to encourage the active participation of the community and develop its role as an educational source at the public service, making possible the documented contemplation of new artistic languages and the most contemporary forms of artistic and cultural patrimony.

Workshop: Interactive Stories. Pablo Iglesias.
The workshop consists in producing cartoons for a story at the same time as it is being told, showing the children how a told story is transformed into a visual story and showing the way in which illustrators imagine and give life to characters and stories. The story-telling will be performed by the actresses Laura Suárez and Paula Moya and the cartoons will be produced by the Asturian artist Pablo Iglesias.
Pablo Iglesias graduated in Graphic Arts and Design from Escuela de Arte Oviedo [the Art School of Oviedo] and has taken part in exhibitions corresponding to the Awards Art Nalón in Langreo and Explora at Espacio Astragal in Asturias and in the XVI Muestra de Artes Plásticas [Plastic Art Exhibition] in the Principality of Asturias. Winner of the first prize of Young Plastic Artists (Asturias) in 2007, Pablo has shown his work individually at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Avilés. He combines his creative activity with his dedication to workshops and his work in the field of graphic design.

Workshop: Botaniq, archivando experiencias [Botaniq, Archiving Experiences]
A way of preserving art is through our own experiences and interaction, reinterpreting and capturing its spirit, synthesis and essence. Being able to look beyond the materiality in an artwork and see an artefact that narrates stories of a unique, individual and unrepeatable journey. The workshop consists in the conservation of media art through your own experience, developing an illustrated personal diary. Participants choose an artwork exhibited at LABoral, making notes, composing graphically, describing their experience facing the work over a four-day period.  At the end of the workshop, each participant’s diary will be presented to the general public and compiled in an encyclopaedic volume which will remain as historic patrimony in the Mediateca_Archivo at LABoral.
