The European Digital Art and Science Network launches its first call for an artistic residency

LABoral and the seven artistic and cultural institutions that are part of The European Digital Art and Science Network have launched it first international call for an artistic residency. The appeal invites artists all over the world working in the framework of Science and Technology offering artists the chance to spend several weeks at the ESO, European Southern Observatory, Chile, followed by a stay at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Linz (Austria).
The European Digital Art and Science Network is a large-scale project, funded by the European Union in its programme Creative Europe, which aims fostering the collaboration between artists and scientists under the principles of interdisciplinary, European intercultural exchange and the development of new audiences. This project is joined by one scientific institution, ESO (European Southern Observatory) from Chile, and eight European cultural institutions, which are, in addition to LABoral and Ars Electronica Linz, the Center for the Promotion of Science (Serbia), the DIG Gallery (Slovakia), the Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation (Spain), Zavod K6/4 (Slovenia), GV Art (England) and the Science Gallery (Ireland). Half the financing of the European Digital Art and Science Network is being provided by the European Union; the other 50% is contributed on an equal basis by the participating institutions.
The European Digital Art and Science Network aims to link up scientific aspects and ideas with approaches used in digital art. Fostering interdisciplinary work and intercultural exchange as well as gaining access to new target audiences are among its declared goals. There is also strong emphasis on art’s role as a catalyst in processes of social renewal. By creating images and narratives dealing with the potential risks and rewards inherent in technological and scientific development, artists exert an important influence on how our society comes to terms with these innovations.
Aspirants can submit a short video elaborating on a project idea they would like to develop and implement in the context of stays at the ESO and the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The deadline for the submission of the project will finish on February 16 2015. The winning artist will receive an award (no prize money). In addition, accommodation, an artist fee and travel are funded from a designated limited fund for all residencies.
A jury made up of representatives of all network members will convene February 23-25 to select two artists to participate in the Residency program. Mentors will accompany and support the two winners at both the ESO and the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The first part of the Residency will serve as a source of inspiration; the second part is designed for implementation of the artistic project.
The results of the residencies will premiere at the Ars Electronica Festival September 3-7, 2015 in Linz. Then, a modularly constructed travelling exhibition will make the rounds, starting by LABoral, of all the cultural partner institutions. This exhibition will be accompanied by workshops and discursive formats such as conferences and symposia.

It carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities for astronomy to enable important scientific discoveries.
