‘Oberhausen on Tour’ and a retrospective of Harun Farocki will be complemented by a session devoted to the winners of Premio filMO 2014

LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial has reached an agreement with Goethe-Institut Madrid for celebrating two series of audiovisual screenings, that will be organised also by the Gijon Film Festival. This will include Oberhausen on tour, two roaming series of short films coming from the prestigious festival that takes place in this German town, and Convertir(se) en imagen, a historic retrospective of the recently deceased German filmmaker Harun Farocki.

Furthermore and in the framework of FICXLAB, a section of Gijón Film Festival organised by LABoral and aimed at introducing video-art and experimental filmmaking in a film festival like Gijon’s, another section will be organised to present the winning films of Premio filMO 2014.

Julius Richard and Mercedes Menéndez have been the winners of the Jury Award and Public Award respectively, in 2014. filMO is a pocket-filmmaking festival made with mobile devices, such as phones and photo cameras, created and promoted by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial since its first edition. It is aimed at fostering creativity and critical thinking among young creators in a society built and understood around the centrality of the digital image.

This session, organised by LABoral in collaboration with Gijon Film Festival and Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto, will consist of the projection of Frygt ob Baeven, by Julius Richard, Jury Award and, and No storyboard film, by Mercedes Menéndez, Public Award. The session will be completed with Tríptico del amor supremo, by Julius Richard.

This programme has been presented today Tuesday by Nacho Carballo, Director of Gijon Film Festival; Raquel Huergo, Manager of the Culture Department of Fundación Municipal de Cultura, Educación y Universidad Popular del Ayuntamiento de Gijón; and Alfredo Aracil, Project Manager at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial. These two institutions reinforce their collaboration in an attempt to articulate a regular programme of screenings to showcase the current audiovisual production. They all emphasised that, like in the case of Memoria del descrédito, a cycle of screenings carried out in 2014 in partnership with Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, sessions will take place in several venues: LABoral Centro de Arte, the Assembly Room of LABoral Ciudad de la Cultura and Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto.

The winner of Premio Universo vídeo 2014 has been also announced. This award is organised jointly by LABoral and Gijon International Film Festival. This year the jury has chosen the Tunisian artist Ismaïl Bahri who works in Paris and Lyon. His work Orientations, 2010 is included in the exhibition Universo vídeo. La Vidéothèque currently being shown at LABoral. This piece shows a walk through Tunisia with a glass full of water with black ink that, held in the hand, works as a lens reflecting the environment. This award is funded with 800 € and a two-week artistic residency at LABoral for the winner to create a shortfilm about Gijón.

Oberhausen on Tour
The Oberhausen International Shortfilm Fetival has been, during 50 years, the catalyst and showcase of contemporary developments in shortfilms, as well as a discussion forum open to new trends and talents. From Roman Polanski to Cate Shortland, from George Lucas to Pipilotti Rist, over more than five decades, it has become one of the most highly regarded filmmaking events where great figures have premiered their films.

LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial joins the worldwide tour fostered by Oberhausen Festival that this year, in its ninth edition, will present programmes in 54 venues in 24 countries. In partnership with Goethe Institute and Gijon International Film Festival, the Art Centre organises the presentation in Gijón of two programmes, one devoted to international pieces and another one devoted to German pieces, selected out of all the shortfilms that took part in the competition sections in 2014.

Premios filMO 2014: Julius Richard and Mercedes Menéndez

Jury Award: Julius Richard
Philosopher, writer, critic and amateur filmmaker. He has published dozens of articles and an experimental novel called Elementos enviados. He is preparing a poetry book (luzazul) and a collection of philosophic-filmmaking essays (La requetemodernidad).
His filmography, developed from 2011, includes 50 pieces that make up a single film.

Frygt ob Baeven, 2014 (6’)
The city is blurred and its rythm turns glassy like the sea. A few takes are enough to build a universe of textures and lights that reflects the city. The moon, the sun, the beach: Common landscapes in some cities that, suddenly, become unique. The soundtrack is an echo of Val del Omar’s mysticism.

Public Award: Mercedes Menéndez
Photojournalist. She studied photography, filmmaking and audiovisual language at Centro de Imagen de Gijón and at Universidad Popular. She received a grant for a course on photography and new technologies at Cabueñes86, and she completed a residency at Niort, France, with the Europe Art Art grant for young artists in 1992. While she continued training, during the 1990s she worked, published and collaborated with several local and national media. She has taken part in over one hundred exhibitions, national and international, individual and collective, the last one is an audiovisual project under the title Volver a la tierra la revolución de las huertas. She has won over fifty awards.

No storyboard film, 2014 (1’15’’)
With no previous storyboard,  No storyboard film narrates a week of cinema from the perspective of a viewer’s eye that visits the venues of the Festival and gets involved in filmmaking activities, meeting directors and actors that have worked in the films she chooses to watch... This week shows that she is part of a mass, of a whole, moving to eat a well-seasoned dish that focuses on the cinema screen and is made up by many ingredients.

Tríptico del amor supremo is the story of and end or , actually, two: The end of love and the end of the world. A eschatological tryptic with a visionary discipline: Look at what has to be seen. It is an epiphany: In the present, the matter of time. A cinema of foreseers and illuminati. It is an elegy: The past, the memory of time; a cinema of ghosts and spirits. Ortoño, Facies totius universi (Sunday, March 16, 2008) and inV/Fierno are the three stages of a process of demolition, desintegration and, also, renaissance. We do not know what cinema is capable of, but it can project us onto the future.

Convertir(se) en imagen: A historic retrospective of the German filmmaker Harun Farocki
Recently deceased in 2014, the six programmes presented pay tribute to this essential figure of the centrality of images in our culture, Harum Farocki (Czeck Republic, 1944). Militant filmmaker, close to the revolutionary ideology of the European left wing of the 1960s, Farocki was able to guide the critic of images to a mutant terrain, similar and at the same time different to the work of Godard, where fiction and documentary are combined in the form of an essay.
