Poetry contest based on the exhibition 'Noches eléctricas'
In collaboration with Ediciones El Gaviero, the competition celebrates World Poetry Day
First Poetry Contest Haikus Eléctricos
LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, in collaboration with El Gaviero Ediciones, is holding its First Poetry Contest Haikús Eléctricos [Electrical Haikus] based on the exhibition Noches Eléctricas [Electrical Nights] which will be inaugurated next 18th March at the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial. The aim of this call is to commemorate the World Poetry Day, along with the creators of the occasion, which has been held every 21st March (spring equinox) since 2001, at the proposal of Unesco, aimed at promoting the basic word and reflection on our time.
The competition intends to bring together different artistic languages, proposing a fusion between synthetic poetry and photons to combine the poetic and artistic creation of the show conceived by Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris and co-produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón.
The haiku, dervied from haikai, is a short poem of three verses of five, seven and five syllables respectively. It is one of the most widespread traditional Japanese poetry forms and its themes are linked to nature. In compliance with the contest rules, the haikus that are submitted should be based on a theme in connection with Noches Eléctricas: the electrical world, illumination, pyrotechnics altering the principle of horizontal vision. The compositions must conform to the classic poetic measure of 17 syllables, although the verses don’t need to rhyme.
The contest is open to people of all ages, although only one haiku per participant will be accepted. Texts should be sent in electronic format to the following address: haikuselectricos@gmail.com along with an attached file with the author’s personal data: full name, postal address, electronic mail, telephone, age and identity card number. In addition, the haikus must be unknown, written in Spanish without having won any prizes in previous contests or having been previously published.
The period for the submission of original work to the competition starts today, Tuesday 2nd March and ends on 19th March, 2011. A jury formed by people working in the cultural sector will select the winning piece which will be awarded with 100 euros to spend in LABshop (http://tienda.laboralcentrodearte.org/es/440-tienda/), a set of publications by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and a LABoral Friends membership card during the year 2011, giving free access to the exhibitions, invitations to all the Centre’s openings during the course of the year, free access to guided tours, special rates for workshops, courses and seminaries, access to the Media Library and the right to choose a catalogue from any exhibition taking place during this year, among other advantages.
