Panacoustic Vortex

Panacoustic Vortex is the resulting work of the two-month production residency completed by Esther Mañas and Arash Moori,  that will be exhibited until next September 18 in LABoral's Plataforma 1. The visitors of Panacoustic Vortex will live a unique experience visualising and listening to different forms of energy through copper.

The ubiquity of copper in the field of telecommunications, its market value, as well as its recyclability and electric conductivity are some of the points of departure of this project.

The installations of copper around us, hidden in walls, ceiling and floorings, enable electric conductivity and, at the same time, the conversion of human relationships and their activity into electric signals. This makes copper a valuable material of power, technological progress and control of the contemporary society.

The exhibition presents several pieces that visualise, in different ways, the energy conveyed through copper. On the one hand, two sculptures/antenae in spiral shape capture the electromagnetic frequencies of the venue to transmit them two the laser projectors that draw with light the electric waves by means of the stochastic vibrations of their engines. This coupling of magnetic energy from one system to another, that help us see and hear what used to be imperceptible, is the  basis of Panacoustic Vortex.

On the other hand, in addition to the antennae and lasers that work as a panopticon system amplifying the electromagnetic emissions and the sound, which is also present in these copper networks, the artists have taken a series of 60x50cm analog photographies. In these images we can see high-voltage discharges on copper fragments, that leave the mark of the energy conducted by this metal, like fractal strokes.

Esther Mañas and Arash Moori collaborate artistically since 2005 with space sound works that explore the acoustics and characteristics of the venue based on their individual practices.

They have presented their work in Interstate (2015) in Art Center/South Florida, in partnership with A/CE, Acción Cultural Española; Invoking a Demon Landscape, Sonido Implícito (2010) in Fundación Joan Miró, Espai 13, Barcelona; Estación Experimental (2011) in CA2M, Madrid and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón; Stand Resovision de Resonance FM (2010) in Frieze Art Fair, London; September at the Hotel Ozone (2011) K.A.I.R, Košice Artist in Residency, Slovakia; Alles für das Wohl des Volkes (2009) Kuntsverein Leipzig, Leipzig; and in Composition for Five Rooms (2007) HAP, Hammarby Artport in partnership with IASPIS, Stockholm.

The Production Grant DKV Seguros – Álvarez Margaride is a result of a five-year partnership agreement between LABoral and DKV Seguros. Both entities undertake to organise, produce and showcased the work selected. This call pays homage to the entrepreneur José Luis Álvarez Margaride, born in Gijon and Chairman of DKV until his death in 2010, recognising his business commitment with Asturias and his support to art, culture and scientific research.
