Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky’s whole body of work is a critical survey of everyday objects and the foundations of material culture. The indexicality and mimicry of the manufacturing process of these sculptures, together with the figure’s inherent decompositional process, refers to some of the keys of industrial production: mass production, degradation and decomposition and the expiry date of products. On the other hand, the tension caused by the contrasts between the material referent (the car), revolving around strength and power, and fragility of the manufacturing material (aluminium), suggests ideas like the car crash and the implied fragility of our material culture.
