Naeem Mohaiemen is a writer and artist working in Dhaka and New York (shobak.org). He uses text, photography and video to explore history rupture, security panic and utopia/dystopia slippage. His projects look at military coups, surveillance state, partition of South Asia and the left’s relationship with ultra-violence. As part of activist networks in Bangladesh, he writes on religious and ethnic minorities for the ASK Annual Human Rights report (askbd.org) and blogs on rights issues(unheardvoice.net/author/naeem). His essays include Islamic Roots of Hip-Hop (Sound Unbound, MIT Press), Illusion of a Silver Porsche (Men of Global South, Zed Books), Why Mahmud Can’t be a Pilot (Nobody Passes, Seal Press). Collectives in Atomised Time (with Doug Ashford, Idensitat, Spain); Amphibian Man (Manifesta 7), Everybody Wants to Be Singapore (La Buena Vida/Democracy, Carlos Motta, ICA), Adman Blues Become Artist Liberation (Indian Highway, Hans Ulrich-Obrist, Serpentine Gallery).
