Technology and media researcher and scientist. He studied Biology and Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Lima). He holds a MSc in Information System from the London School of Economics and Political Science – LSE (London), and is a founding member of Alta Tecnología Andina (ATA), an NGO for the development and research of art, science and technology in Latin America (www.ata.org.pe). Vice-president of the Acervo Leistenschneider, one of the most important pre-Columbian collections of arts and sciences (www.acervoprecolombino.org).
He has been member of the National Commission for Culture of the Government of Peru (2001-2002) and founding Director (ad-honorem) of Casa Museo José Carlos Mariategui of the Instituto Nacional de Cultura (1995-2005). He has lectured at the following universities: Cayetano Heredia, Ricardo Palma, San Ignacio de Loyola and LSE, has developed research studies, and published a series of articles on art, science, technology and society. While he was a resident artist at the CICV Pierre Schaeffer, he collaborated with Gianni Toti in VideoPoemOpera “Tupac Amauta” (France, 1997-2002). A member of the Philosophy and Scientific Thinking Program of the University Cayetano Heredia. Founder of the International Video/Art/Electronic Festival (Lima, 1998-2003) (www.festivalvae.com). Member of the Committee for the Cultural Diversity of the Electronic Arts Inter-Society (ISEA) and of ISEA 2006 Pacific Rim New Media Summit.
He has curated several international media art exhibitions, such as Nueva/Vista videokunst aus Lateinamerika (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen - Bonn, Stuttgart and Berlin, 2002-2003), Via Satélite: Panorama de la Fotografía y el Video en el Perú contemporáneo (with Miguel Zegarra, touring 2004 – 2006, http://www.viasateliteperu.org), Videografías In(visibles) (with Jorge Villacorta, Museo Patio Herreriano, CAAM Canarias and touring Latin America, 2005-2008,www.videografiasinvisibles.org).
He has been member of the jury for in the 13 Videobrasil (2001), Videoformes (2003), Third edition of the Central American Videocreation Competition (2004), Art & Artificial Life International Competition– Fundación Telefónica (2004-2007), and member of the Assessment Committee of the Prix Ars Electronica (2004-2007).
He is editor of the Leonardo Electronic Almanac (lea.mit.edu.) and acted as a node in the project Tester (www.e-tester.net), an experimental platform for creation. Mariátegui has published for SONY "Zapping al Futuro" (Lima, 2003) and "Perú/Video/Arte/Electrónico memorias del festival internacional de video/arte/electronica" (Lima, 2004). Currently, he is a PhD student of Information Systems at LSE and member of the team investigating the social-economic consequences of the digital information growth (www. informationgrowth.info). He lives and works in London.
