Hugo Fontela, felt since childhood interest in drawing and painting, but will not be until 2001, with 14 years, and with the help of the Asturian artist Amado Hevia, "Favila" when Fontela will join the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Avilés. In it he will learn to paint in an academic way, causing him to receive the Premio Extraordinario al Mérito en las Artes, which only the most outstanding students are awarded with. Leaving the school in June 2002 aged 16, while ending compulsory secondary education. Later he studied at the Escuela de Arte de Oviedo, in order to study the Bachelor of Fine Arts. From that moment he is gradually integrated into the world of art, combining his training with an active participation in the artistic life of the Principality. In 2004 performs the tests P.A.U. with results that will empower them to start Bellas Artes, but finally decided to move to study at The Art Students League in New York. Already in the United States, in November 2005, obtained in its twentieth edition, the Premio BMW de Pintura, one of the most prestigious in Spain, received in Madrid, from Her Majesty the Queen Sofia. After receiving this important award, he attends as a guest to the XVIII Bienal de Pintura Ciudad de Zamora. In 2007 he receives the Premio al Mejor Artista award of the ESTAMPA graphic art fair, awarded by the association of Críticos de Arte de Madrid. During the year 2011, Catalonia and Asturias have been the scenarios chosen for two large samples of his work. At the Museo de Montserrat, with a sample that runs throughout his American production, which was opened by the Príncipes de Asturias awards, and the Centro Niemeyer in Aviles, with his sample Niemeyer By Fontela. Since 2005 lives and works in Manhattan.
