Frank Breuer

Born in Germany in 1963. Lives and works in Köln. Recent exhibitions include: Saint Louis Art Museum; Gallery Luisotti, Santa Monica; Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College; Goethe-Gallery, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong.

Through the prism of seriality and a typological gaze, Frank Breuer focuses on logos, commercial signs, warehouses and industrial buildings, all the elements of the global capitalist landscape. Multinationals spread their corporate image everywhere, transforming their logos into advanced symbols of said globalization. Breuer’s photos of posts along roads and highways with the signs of companies convey the quality of new totems, sculptural structures with no apparent purpose other than to emphasise the omnipresence and power of the corporations they represent. Devoid of any functionality or specific geographical location, the signs become true icons, depicting both the industrial transformation of the landscape and society’s ideals. The small scale underscores the schematicness of shapes and the play of graphics, the uniformity and persistence of these symbols and their role in the competition to occupy the public space as a site for advertising and reinforcing consumerism.
