Ernesto Neto

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1964. Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.

Ernesto Neto has established over the past 20 years an international reputation for his work. His influences range from modernist artists, such as Alexander Calder and Constantin Brancusi, to his Brazilian predecessors Waltercio Caldas Tunga, Cildo Meireles and José Rezende, and important Brazilian representatives of minimalism and arte povera such as Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica and Amilcar de Castro. Neto's biomorphic nylon sculptures and multi-sensory environments exist, in the artist's words, as “a place of sensations, a place of exchange and continuity between people”.

Ernesto Neto has been the subject of major solo exhibitions in New York and Paris and has been included in major group shows including the Carnegie International and the Venice Biennale 2001. Recent solo exhibitions include: Museum of Modern Art, São Paulo; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Hayward Gallery, London, all in 2010.
