Edward Burtynsky’s body of work is largely concerned with industry’s ability to modify nature. However, these induced alterations are contradictorily and tensely caught between the need to consume and its consequences on the world; between the success of progress and its effects. According to the artist himself, his images function as metaphors for our existence: a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear, based on the certainty that, whether consciously or unconsciously, our progress causes suffering in the world.
