Avelino Sala
Born in Gijón, 1972
Graduated with a BA (Hons degree) in Critical Art Practice from the Brighton University. He is co-editor of the magazine Sublime (www.sublimeart.net) and co-founder of the curatorial group Commission. Sala works with concepts related with society today, its crisis and dreams, from a late-romantic perspective, critique, solitude, the position of antihero, hope and drama. His vision is based on an apocalyptic and ironic approach, opening up a gateway to optimism and resistance. He has taken part in many events and projects like the Caracas Biennial (2006), Poles Apart/Poles Together at the Venice Biennale (2005), Reflexionen at Rostock Kunsthalle (2005), the Valencia Biennial (2007), Small Revolutions, TINA B: The Prague Contemporary Art Festival (2008), The Promised Land, Chelsea Art Museum, New York (2008), and FWWM, Central Park, Swiss Embassy in New York (2008). With grants and scholarships from CajAsturias, Hangar in Barcelona and Bilbao Arte among others, his work has gone on to enter various collections like Caja Madrid’s Testimonio collection (Generación 2003 Award), the Consejo Superior de Deportes, Explum, and others.In 2007 he won the Artport International Video Award in Basel, sponsored by UNESCO and the NY Foundation for the Arts. At present, he is preparing work for the Havana Biennial, the Virgil de Voldere gallery in New York and Casa de España in Santo Domingo.
