Your uncertain shadow (colour), 2010

As with most of Olafur Eliasson’s work, the visitor’s active participation is of vital importance in Your uncertain shadow (colour). Entering a seemingly empty space, she/he notices a row of small, bright spotlights in several colours that lies on the floor. As she/he passes in front of the device, it casts multiple shadows of her/him against the opposite blank wall. These shadows vary in colour, darkness and size, depending on the visitor’s position. Space and scale are re-assessed in the light of this deceptively simple yet truly efficient and playful mechanism, a quality that is also emblematic of Eliasson’s work. Visitors haphazardly experiment with the system: to move is to open or close the fan of shadows, to experience the laws of projection and the delight of the silhouette simultaneously.

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1967. Lives and works in Berlin.
