My contributions to this exhibition were chosen from different bodies of my work for their subject matter; the automobile and the gas engine. Volvo Engine and Juggernaut are both studies of the engine of my own car at the time. I was taken with the inadvertent composition of the engine, it initially seemed like a Medusa’s Head or a Jackson Pollock “all over” composition. But then I recognized it as an open torso on an operating table. The engine was old and “sick”, its heaving, sputtering, organs pulsing to an irregular rhythm. Juggernaut is an animated version of Volvo Engine, a “breathing tableau”.
