U de Urugay (sé rico, sé famoso, sé maravilloso...o sé tú), 2012
Martín Sastre (Uruguay, 1976). DVD Colour, sound. Ed. 1/3. 2’22’’
U de Uruguay (U for Uruguay) is a conceptual piece consisting of a video and a perfume created by the artist Martín Sastre from scents of flowers grown by President Mújica in his farm outside Montevideo. Mújica himself collaborated with the artist and filmmaker by collecting chirca, a wild autochthonous flower that grows abundantly in the orchard of the country’s head of state. Only three bottles exist. The first one is owned by President Mújica; the second was auctioned at the 2011 Venice Biennale and sold for US$50,000 to the collection of the Faena Arts Centre in Buenos Aires; and the third one is in the possession of the artist himself.
The video U de Uruguay was recorded inside Banco República, the headquarters of Uruguay’s National Treasury.
