Since 1968, scientist-artist Cornelia Hesse-Honegger has been painting pictures of flies and other bugs that have mutated as a result of environmental contamination and atomic radiation. Since the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986, she has collected more than 16,000 insects in the fallout zones of Chernobyl and nuclear facilities in Europe and the US.
Her collection of leaf bugs from areas with nuclear fallout, is probably the only collection worldwide with an environmental aspect.
