Ryoichi Kurokawa’s impressive audiovisual compositions bring visual and sonic material together using a completely revolutionary perspective. His language, a new international benchmark in the world of digital art, field recordings and computer-generated structures coexist in harmony, and open the gateway to an imaginary world where complexity and simplicity alternate and combine in a strange symbiosis.
rheo: 5 horizons is an audiovisual installation composed of five flat-panel-displays and five multi-channel speakers. Each vertically long imagery pairs with each mono channel sound, and each video is synchronized to each audio. They are juxtaposed in line like a five-member ensemble and they behave as five independent audiovisual apparatuses. By being synthesized with the movement of the image, the spatial cognition of the sound can be enhanced. That is, the behaviour of imagery indicates the sound source position, sonic direction and drive. It provides the space to rediscover the sonic movement, position, and the relation between ego and sound. These resonances have an impact on sensory perception and develop a similar synesthetic experience. The sound adds a width and a depth via the integration of auditory and visual sense, and builds a spatial audiovisual construction which gives a renewed recognition of space.
