Popular Organisation, 2010

With this same title, Santino Escatel reproduced a prototype consisting of several of the chairs once used in the workshops of the Universidad Laboral. He employed them to build a column with tools such as pickaxes connecting the individual pieces. The project was originally presented at the opening exhibition of Alegorías de la migración [Allegories of Migration] in Mexico in February. The artist later submitted his work to a process of fire until obtaining the ashes on display here. This metaphorical change unquestionably reveals the importance of the process of creation in obtaining an art object. Here Santino Escatel shows the work in its final incarnation with the collaboration of a representative from an association of immigrants based in Asturias, who painted a symbolic square with the resulting ashes.
