Still El eje del mal, 2003

While a radio broadcasts news on the attacks on Iraq, a mother teaches her daughter how to clean the bathroom, how to kill the evil and potentially harmful germs that live there. ‘Annihilating’ and ‘exterminating’ are words that have a soothing effect in the mouth of the mother and a neutral tone on the radio. The jokiness of a domestic situation like cleaning the bathroom contrasts sharply with the voice of the speaker.

Through the use of an apparently innocent aesthetic, Cristina Lucas engages in a biting critique of the structures of power, the manipulation of the media and even gender issues such as the education of women.
