Commissioned and installed by LABoral and EMULSA (courtesy of James Bridle), Drone Shadow: Gijon is a large-scale outline of a military MQ-1 Predator drone. The work is installed as a public art project addressing reports of La Guardia Civil testing this model as a possible surveillance device for the coastline of Spain. The area that the ‘shadow’ covers is a busy square next to the port of Gijon, in Claudio Alvargonzález Street. With his work on drone shadows, James Bridle investigates how technology can obfuscate and obscure acts of war. His work aims to make visible the hidden infrastructures and strategies used by the military, as a way of reminding us of our social and moral responsibility in relation to war.
