Cinelândia, 2012

An abandoned house in the middle of the jungle in Tijuca, near Rio de Janeiro, is the centrepiece of Cinelândia by Louidgi Beltrame. Criss-crossed by a number of different textual layers ranging from a text by Marguerite Duras to anthropological writing, or the script for a movie that Antonioni never actually filmed, here we see an empty glass volume, a now abandoned project designed in the 1950s by Oscar Niemeyer that is like a kind of hut on the threshold of the forest. It may well be a modern looking control point or missile silo, from where nature is seen as exuberant and at once indifferent, alive but never fully human.
